Unifying new Centre for Brain Health joins exisiting facility through integrated skyway

Traditionally, medical researchers and clinicians have rarely interacted with each other, but with the advent of translational research over the past decade, the medical professions are recognising the advantages of combining healing with scientific investigation.

As the first known facility to blend neuroscience and psychological research, the 135,000 sq ft Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health will combine clinical and academic research programmes in a novel translational research discovery environment aimed at promoting collaboration. Designed by Anshen+Allen, it will bring together neurology, neuroscience, and psychiatry to provide patient care and support brain disease research.

Montreal museum exhibits celebration of Canadian cultural heritage through redevelopments devoted to fine arts

The museum of Montreal, having recently turned the ripe age of 150 is rejuvenating its inner façade, offering a revamped tribute to Canada’s rich cultural heritage. The two dominating elements to this structural progression are a starkly extended gallery in addition to a 444-seat concert hall. Having already become available to the general public in October 2011, those visitors to have already graced it's latest fare would have absorbed a guaranteed 20% extra offering of fine art. The Claire and Marc Bourgie Pavilion features 18,953 sq ft. of exhibition space, doubling the previous display area afforded to the attraction’s collection. It is hoped some 600 works of Canadian art will now be on display, including recently restored works and many major acquisitions.

Norway’s Seljord Lookout Point Peers Out to the Water Searching for the Selma Sea Monster

Lake Seljord is inhabited by a giant eel-like sea monster named Selma who overturns boats and dances on the water -- or so say the residents of Seljord, Norway. Like Nessie, Bigfoot, and the Yeti, there are hundreds of witnesses who have seen Selma in the lake, but there is little credible evidence to prove she is a reality. But that doesn't stop the tourists visiting the famous Lake Seljord from attempting to catch a glimpse of her. In 2008, the town decided to capitalize on the lore by building a lookout tower for visitors to use while seeking out for Selma. Designed by Rintala Eggertsson Architects, the Seljord Lookout Point is made completely of wood and provides a new way for visitors to experience nature, and of course, hunt for sea monsters.

white arkitekter: visitor centre vattenriket

swedish practice white arkitekter has designed the 'naturum vattenriket' a visitor centre within a nature reserve just outside of kristianstad, sweden. across the river helge positioned a few hundred meters from the urban center, the structure becomes a visible landmark within a wetlands reserve. dedicated to waterfowl, the building screens the lake side of the site from visitor reception. two timber bridges approaching from the east and west lead across the grasses, bushes and reeds, merging close to the center. the western path leads to the structure while the eastern walk is recessed similar to a nest into the landscape.

Striking new headquarters of the Hungarian Autoklub takes form of letter 'A'

Vikar&Lukacs Architects Studio won the commission for this project through a competition for a new iconic 3,430 sq m headquarters of the Hungarian Autoklub. The main gesture of the building is a ribbon that wraps around the office spaces on seven floors, while articulating a letter 'A’.

Extension of a 120 year old military school completed by Vikar&Lukacs Architects

This historic building functioned as a military school in the past was built in 1897. The original house was almost 100m long then a sport and event hall was attached to it in 1926. In 1941 and in the following decades a new wing for the kitchen and restaurant area and for further functions was joined to the main building. In this more recent alteration, the vision of practice Vikar&Lukacs Architects Studio was to demolish the attached parts and rethink the building while retaining its original form.

'tipu sultan merkez' earthen school in jar maulwi, pakistan by berlin-based architectural and engineering practice ziegert roswag seiler architekten ingenieure has received this year's holcim award for sustainable construction within the asia-pacific region. the first level of of the two-story building is constructed with cob walls comprised of locally sourced clay, sand, straw, water and earth. resting upon brick foundations, the interior spaces are protected from moisture penetrating from the ground or rainwater. the upper floor is a bamboo framework filled with an earthen mixture.

Istanbul Disaster Prevention and Education Centre by OODA Architects (PRT)

The aim of the competition for the Istanbul Disaster Prevention and Education Centre was to establish a proposal for a centre fully equipped with adequate technology and facilities in order to be prepared against a disaster that may affect Istanbul and to develop public consciousness about the disasters in general and specifically about earthquakes. Along this the centre will also be hosting relevant courses, venues and seminars.

The building works as a new icon and landmark of the city, but its most important purpose is to serve the citizens of Istanbul as a major emergency shelter in case of real natural disaster like earthquake or flood.

New meets old in vision for future campus
Perkins Eastman, in collaboration with Shandong Design Institute, has designed a constructible master plan for the new Qingdao branch of Shandong University (SDU). 1.2 million sq m of buildings will be constructed in a single phase on the 202-hectare campus, breaking ground in late 2011 with estimated completion in 2016.

Situated on the Yellow Sea overlooking Aoshan Bay near Qingdao, the campus will expand Shandong University's international presence by providing world-class teaching, living, and research and development facilities. Cultural facilities on the campus also will serve the local Qingdao community.

new york-based firm sharon davis design has commenced construction this summer on 'women's opportunity center', a rwandan school based on the idea of enabling women to be self-sufficient. the school was commissioned by women for women international, a non-profit humanitarian organization based in washington. they believe that in order to rebuild a country that has suffered through genocide, the best approach is education and self-empowerment at a grassroots level. the center will be both a permanent residence and a gathering place for women survivors of war as they learn new skills including crafts and brick making. the project aims to rebuild social infrastructure and restore cultural heritage.

joly & loiret: le grand stade

paris-based firm joly & loiret have completed 'le grand stade', an equestrian arena with stables in fontainebleau, france. positioned along the forest edge, the structure appears to recede into the trees and blend into the earth with a cladding of black locust wood. gridded steel caging lines the sloped facade encouraging climbing plants and flowers to encompass the exterior. the boundaries of the site are loosely defined, leading into a series of horseback riding nature trails which cross under bridges for pedestrian pathways. the entrance path passes an exhibitors area and horse rest area and leading to a grand wooden stairway guiding visitors to a rooftop promenade. the boardwalk leads to the tiered seating of the main stadium and returns to the ground level again.

los angeles-based practice michael maltzan architecture and berkeley-based landscape architecture practice tom leader studio have collaborated to produce 'the lens' a shortlisted proposal for the st. petersburg pier international design competition for the bayside city of st. petersburg, florida. the masterplan hope to generate a central and iconic element which connects the city with the waterfront creating a relationship with the bay. similar to a magnifying glass upon the water's surface, the sail-like structure rises from the water creating a framed view of the sky and horizon. two pedestrian paths cross each other at varied elevations provide alternative experiences for walking and bicycling.

The increasingly populous Muslim community of Cambridge is accommodated with new Romsey Mosque

The potential for a boldly assimilating new Mosque design lies in the hands of Cambridge City Council, as plans by Marks Barfield Architects have recently been put forward. Championed by a diverse team of experienced individuals, such as Prof. Keith Critchlow - former professor of Islamic art - this striking structure is to be erected in a fusion of influences. Drawing on common aspects of both English and Islamic architectural practice, an essential condition for this complex blend, was a complete avoidance of standard cliché references emerging in the aesthetics. The spurring factor, justifying this latest edition, was the inability of the city’s former Mosque to physically accommodate Cambridge’s growing Muslim community. Intended to be situated merely a few hundred yards from the existing place of worship, these new facilities will substantially ease the burden (with a capacity of 1,000), and even allow a downsizing to the former premises.

This building located at 346 West 17th Street in NYC was originally built in 1969 and named the Joseph Curran Annex (the Seamen's Training School and Dormitory), and in 2003 became the Maritime Hotel. Currently the facade is going thru another incarnation...this time a metal facade which i think makes it very modern looking and very cool.....

Parametric Designed Transformative Facade for Mumbai School / Sanjay Puri

The building is located in a densely populated residential part of Mumbai, with hight desity ranging from 7 to 15 stories. This height regulation governs the development of the entire neighborhood, including the school site. In order to create privacy in the school spaces and make the building more efficient, designers at Sanjay Puri Architects introduced a second skin of hexagonal modules encompassing the entire building. The modules have small openings on the southern side to reduce heat gain into the building while providing cross ventilation since the sun during most of the year is on the southern side in this location while southwest breeze blows throughout the year. Towards the northern side, with indirect sunlight, the hexagons are like truncated pipes moving in and out and creating additional usable spaces for sitting, playing or reading as extensions to the open spaces on each floor.

international firm safdie architects has announced its newest project, 'chongquin chaotianmen', a mixed-use complex in chongquin, china, located at the meeting point between the yangtze and jialing rivers. the historically significant site was the traditional chaotian gate where officials received imperial decrees from the emperors. to honor its previous use, the center is divided into eight north-facing towers in the shape of sails upon the water, a modern representation of a fleet of ancient chinese ships.

Salt Lake City embellishes cultural credentials with engaging new museum

On November 18th, Salt Lake City lay host to a grand celebratory opening for its latest attraction: the new Natural History Museum of Utah. Six days of preparatory build-up preceded this final event; by its conclusion, the culminating figure of flocking citizens, drawn to the week-long proceedings, was numbering in the thousands. Serving as the impetus for this extended unveiling was the brainchild of Todd Schliemann of Ennead Architects, who largely envisioned the designs for this enriching, educational project.

Indonesian chocolate factory is world's largest commercial bamboo structure

With a tensile strength higher than mild steel and greater compressive strength than many mixtures of concrete it is no wonder than bamboo continues to be the construction material of choice for many longstanding building projects. Few are quite as ambitious with the material as Big Tree Farms however, who have recently completed the largest bamboo structure in Southeast Asia in Sibang, Bali.

Also being referred to as the largest commercial structure in existence, the new 26,500 sq ft headquarters of this proudly sustainable food company (which boasts close working relationships with over 9,000 farmers) is now in full use as an office facility and working chocolate factory.
