^ True, and it's not like CFL teams are the only ones to vacate venues for other special events in arenas or stadiums. This is something most if not all teams face to varying degrees.

^^ Exactly. If Winnipeg was hosting the World Juniors the Jets and Moose would be asking for schedule accommodations. The CFL was a little different as they were getting really squeezed by MLB with the scheduling at Rogers Center but that is part of the reason the Argos moved out of there. When Toronto needed to play Monday night games for scheduling reasons it had impacts that rippled much wider as a team couldn't play on Monday and then on Thursday, etc.

^ Toronto was a peculiar situation as the teams managed to co-exist just fine until Blue Jays ownership became outwardly hostile to the CFL for business reasons. Then all of a sudden scheduling Argos games became a huge challenge with the Argos having to take all kinds of awkward dates.

The Rogers Center (Skydome) hadn't been working well for the Argos for many years before the scheduling became an issue. The space was too large and it was designed as a baseball stadium first with the football field shoehorned into the space. The MLB mandating natural grass surfaces for all teams and the CFL moving to artificial surfaces like IGF that offer a slightly softer playing surface further cemented the need for the Argos to move. BMO Field looks absolutely beautiful after the CFL focused renovations and is in the top 3 CFL stadiums in my (somewhat biased) eyes with IGF and BC Place. By all accounts I have seen the Riders will be joining that list this season, too bad they have such a horrible team in such a nice stadium. Hamilton though, wow, just wow. You did a complete rebuild and that it what you got? It looks like something you might see at a high school in the US.

^ To be fair, Tim Horton's Field looks more like a mid-major NCAA stadium than a high school venue. It kind of looks like the University of Akron's stadium.

They would have needed to spend double-double what they did to have a better stadium.

BMO field is quite nice, from TV views anyways, but is still natural turf. So the CFL will never have every team playing on artificial turf. Is there still natural grass in Edmonton too? I would think the natural turf would be a better surface for football anyhow.

It was also noted that the natural grass turf for soccer is softer than that for football. So the field gets torn up by the Argos, then the soccer folks come in and clean up the mess. TFC wasn't too happy about ti all at the start.

^^ I think the CFL would prefer to play on the modern artificial turf everywhere if possible. The priority over the last few years was making sure the Argos had a home to play in. Getting a workable team in Quebec City or the Atlantic is a high priority now to have a balanced 10 team league both there is currently not suitable venue.

That said, only BMO Field uses natural grass in the CFL currently. All the others appear to be using turf similar to what IGF has. Going forward it would not be surprising to see the upgrade occur at BMO Field as the similar soccer teams in BC and Ottawa already pay on artificial turf. That said the dominance in artificial turf in Canadian stadiums could be a significant issue/concern in the reported plan for the Canada/USA joint bid for the men's soccer world cup as currently that requires natural grass surfaces exclusively. That said outdoor venues like IGF could potentially build a temporary grass installation similar to the Heritage Classic while BC Place and Olympic Stadium could look at what Rogers Center is doing for natural grass.

Really the reason why the scheduling conflicts with the Jays came up in the last few years was because they had finally fielded a winning team after 15-20 years of mediocrity at best. Attendance and viewership skyrocketed, meaning they were more concerned with timing, as more money was on the line. Plus, they were almost never in the playoffs, so that made it a lot easier for Argos to coexist as well.

If it wasn't so sad it would be funny, more secrecy in the endless repair of the poorly designed, poorly executed, poorly located and poorly constructed Investors Falling Down Stadium!

It's hard to believe that a comment like this coming from someone in your province isn't smirking with a case of schadenfreude.

When you pay 30% more for your new stadium and end up with a facility that is not really any different than what we have had here for years now, then I guess guys like migs make themselves feel better by pointing out the drainage problems that are being remediated.

As for skylar, he just hates the stadium because the NDP was behind it, so naturally everything is wrong with it.

Canada is also making a joint bid with US and Mexico for 2026 Men's World Cup. It's probably a real long shot to have any games in Winnipeg since the three countries will need to share and there will probably only be 15 to 18 stadiums used. Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver and Edmonton would likely be the front runners that Canada puts forward.

On the plus side, the Women's World Cup group stage was very well attended here. Anyway, we can dream for a while at least. First things first, the North American bid needs to be successful.

What is different?

-bigger jumbotron (only at one end of the field, mind you)
-more nicely decorated clubhouse... the Riders hired a good interior designer for their space, I'll give you that
-um
-that's it?

In any event, congratulations on catching up with us... better late than never!

Other things not on our side:

- talks about a new stadium are ramping up in Calgary; if NA gets the World Cup, I'm sure they'll use that as leverage to get it built (and hopefully be a venue)
- Men's World Cup requires 100% natural turf (let's not get into politics here..), and I highly doubt anyone here would be willing to front the money to do it, unless Soccer Canada somehow found the money (unlikely).
- the lowest average attendance of World Cup tourneys in the last 20 years was 43k in Japan/Korea 2002. I don't think they'd even consider 33k at all.
- The CFL will not shut down for 3 weeks during the tournament, meaning they will need at least 4 stadiums during that time.

There's no way that Winnipeg or Regina will get the nod over Toronto or Montreal (Vancouver is a given IMO). Although that said, stadiums in both cities are expandable beyond their 33ish capacities... around 40,000 at IGF, probably around the same at NMS.
