I would bet that someone would have done plenty of testing before starting any construction on the tower. Someone isn't going to dump millions of dollars into any building unless they are sure the thing is safe

Actually, original renderings indicated the same glass facade as we are seeing now.

So, is anyone planning on going to North Korea so we can get an update on this thing?

I am. I'm going to met Kim Jong Il and work on a rap CD with him. Its going to be called "License to Il". The goal is to expose Kim in a positive way to the West.

Seriously though, I would like to but after that SK tourist was shot, not so much anymore. I think you need a guide for your entire journey so it is somewhat doable.

Nah, but this is a really unique situation. There's this huge hotel supposedly built to boost the country's image and patriotism, and yet information about it is so sketchy. I really do hope there is some detailed info about its completion. I would imagine once it's completed, the building will be impressive. You have to admit, it is a pretty cool design.

I didn't realize that. I wonder why they built it with such solid exterior walls and just relatively small cut-outs? If they were going to have a solid glass curtain wall, you'd think they would want to maximize window size like you usually see. Engineering reasons, I suppose?

Maybe not enough expertise at building high-rises. I'm not just saying it like "waa waa NK sucks at everything", but it is true that some countries simply have better experts in certain fields (e.g. I heard that the US is known for its steel works for building while France is great for concrete), and NK's skylines don't seem to have too many examples of cutting edge architecture.

I still can't believe this one is starting up, but glad to see it is. Right now it's an eyesore.

It might be brushed out by the North Korean government before we can get actual photo updates.

Better question: Is anyone from the forums from North Korea?
I wonder if North Koreans can even get Internet access. Not to mention if they could it would consist of maybe a dozen state-run sites.

Notice that at the bottom of one of the photos, it says Yonhap News? The characters appear to be Korean.

Umm....has it crossed anybody's mind in this thread, that could it be possible that they are photoshopping this whole thing??!!

Is this supposed to be a 'capitalist' venture, or a government project? There seem to be very few visitors to this place.

Keep the updates coming, if any.

Do you have a source to that? This is not necessarily true.

Seriously, so many keep claiming that with zero proof.

It seems like half the news articles I've ever seen about this building mention something about the concrete. Just an example, here's a Reuters article that mentions the crumbling concrete a couple of times.

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servl...80718.wkorea18

And I'm sure it could all be dismissed as speculation or propaganda, but if you look at some of the photos already posted, the appearance of some of the building doesn't help.

Here's one from page 3 of this thread

Yonhap News is South Korean.

Really it should be no surprise that one of the best sources for news about North Korea is South Korea.
