progress seems like its going pretty quick on this building - well, at least compared to Manitoba Hydro.

does anyone know when the other 2 cranes are planned to be put up (if thats still the plan)?

Woof, I knew the museum had a large footprint, but that Dan Harper photo really shows the sheer size of this project. Well done for The Forks.

It is going to be an imposing structure once completed. I can't wait to see this puppy start to loom large in the sky. It will give us some big time "WoW" factor as far as architecture goes in this city.

Thanks for the updates. Shockingly from that angle rich_200, the Radisson actually looks respectable. I wasn't sure such a feat was possible. Well done.

The second tower crane should be going up this week. I while back i commented that they were going to use 2 tower cranes until it got to the glazing stage and then remove them in favor of very large crawler cranes. I just learned that that wont be the scenario now. Now they will be installing one extremely tall tower crane (after the other two are dismantled) to finish up the construction.

It's been pointed out elsewhere, but the CMHR in some ways is reminiscent of the Mont. St. Michel silhouette. In that Specifier article ('specifier canadian museum human' in google), Predock's original concept sketch on p.4 reflects that parallel too in a way, especially given the materials of stone, glass, his reference to 'prairie light', etc.

At the same time, apparently the tower part was obligatory in the request for proposals/design competition anyway (something that maybe wasn't followed in all the architects' submissions?), and it mimics the nearby pedestrian bridge tower (in the same way the MB Hydro building shape parallels the WAG, a building which B. Kuwabara has said he admires if I'm not mistaken).

Interesting article:

http://archrecord.construction.com/f...rds/06gold.asp

"Predock often likens his notions of place to a road cut that exposes many layers of influences, from deep bedrock and ancient artifacts to newer accretions of asphalt and structure. “I try to understand place on a deeper level than just the physical or environmental aspects,” he explains. “It includes cultural and intellectual forces, too. It’s an inclusive approach that brings in many disciplines and sees place as a dynamic thing.”

While New Mexico has helped shape Predock’s concept of place, he doesn’t see it limiting his architecture. “The lessons I’ve learned here about responding to the forces of a place can be implemented anywhere,” he says. “I don’t have to invent a new methodology for new contexts. It is as if New Mexico has already prepared me....

His design for the Canadian Museum for Human Rights calls for a pile of stone galleries wrapped by a glass cloud. To create the cloud, he will use shingled glass with photovoltaic cells embedded in some places."

I thought it was common knowledge that CMHR was actually modeled after Hogwarts...

^^^
the cmhp - would be good for marketing I guess...

I don't think I've seen these images in this particular construction thread anyway - maybe some people haven't seen them. I hope the glass is very transparent/ethereal like in some renderings, and not the reflective-looking surface sometimes shown (don't know the effect of the shingled glass and photovoltaic cells)...

Thanks for posting these. I'm liking the overall look, hopefully it will be very similar, the final look of the glass will be critical. Will be very interesting watching this thing go up.

The CMHR might put the manufacturers of Viagra out of business in this city...

I digress.
