damn, with all of these huge chains coming to winnipeg, there'll be no reason to ever go to grand forks/fargo/minneapolis anymore.

I can't believe they could afford Polo Park rents over the long term.

Is something happening in the Dreman Building on Portage? Soup Pierre gone, Second Cup gone ... did they jack up their rents or is there a larger tenant moving in? I don't know how a Second Cup couldn't make a go of it.

Teresa, the super-awesome-but-way-too-happy barista who worked there says they just never got enough business. But it is odd that both Second Cup & Soup Pierre closed within a week of eachother.

(btw, if anyone else misses Teresa, she's now at the Starbucks in the Radisson)

Just thought this belonged in the retail thread, since this will become the largest retail development in the city.

It is going to be HUGE.. makes the massive Ikea look like a normal store.

Even while this is a suburban development I really think this is going to be a huge draw for Winnipeg.

I really liked the domed retail, which will be fairly unique. I also think having a pedestrain friendly plaza in the centre, including pond facing patios and a small stage. I only hope that this development turns out as nice as these pictures indicate.

I really think developing a pedestrain plaza downtown would be good thing.

it would be cool if they would turn the pond into a skating rink during the winter. As some people say shopping at Ikea is an all day thing; so why not take a little cruise on the pond as a break!!!

I agree wholeheatedly. A skating rink within a retail development would be original.

About as original as West Edmonton Mall was decades ago, along with shopping centres around the world.

There is a skating rink at the IKEA Mall complex in Novosibirsk Russia, so this isn't something new for them.

I like the idea though.

I didn't know that the West Ed had an outdoor skating rink which doubles as a pond and I don't get to Novosibirsk as often as I should, but I still feel this will make for an original experience (in Winnipeg at least, if not North America) if they follow through with the skating rink on the pond.

I also like the outdoor stage on the site, but I understand there is a retail development in Finland which also has such a stage, so I won't suggest it is original. It is still different than the usual retail development of this type.

Route 90 is going to see plenty of development over the years. CentrePort to the North, Seasons of Tuxedo and the already developing Kenaston Common in the South Central, and the Waverley West development in the South. Imagine a co-operative development for Kapyong, I'd love to see a development to showcase that such a joint venture is not only possible, but potentially prosperous to all.

Sorry I missed the part about the Pond/ Skating rink being outdoors, in fact both locations I mentioned have indoor rinks.

Personally I think an indoor rink in the summer with an indoor pond in winter would be much cooler. A little bit of Man's influence over its surroundings, kind of thing. It's in line with a giant box rising out of the prairie landscape

Also how is an outdoor rink at ikea going to differenciate itself from the massive parking lot on a cold winter day.

Anyways it's development so it's good, It's new to the city so that's good, and it's going to be an incredible addition to the tax base so that's great.

In all honesty I think the project is good, I just think there are some things that could make it better.

Ahh... Such is the setback of all major developments, as there is always something that can be improved. But for Winnipeg, if it does indeed help increase the city's tax base without hindering polo park's intake, this is a pretty damn good thing!!!
