City to cap basement drains
Precaution against flooding in 280 homes
By: Bartley Kives
Posted: 03/28/2011 1:00 AM

In the overall scheme of a spring flood fight, having to leave your house to do your laundry may not seem like a major inconvenience.
But that's what several hundred Winnipeggers may have to do during the month of April due to a little-known flood-mitigation measure known as drain capping.
Beginning this week, plumbers will begin sealing off the basement drains inside approximately 280 low-lying properties in Winnipeg.

Brandon police to conduct extensive flood survey
CBC News Posted: Mar 31, 2011 1:42 PM CT Last Updated: Mar 31, 2011 1:42 PM CT

Residents of Brandon shouldn’t be alarmed if they see a police officer turn up on their doorsteps in the next two weeks.

In what’s being billed as a first, Brandon Police Service officers are going to nearly 900 homes and businesses in the western Manitoba city to conduct a survey regarding possible evacuations due to springtime flooding from the Assiniboine River.

The biggest concern is the possibility flood waters backing up through the sewer system and creating a health hazard.

Officers will ask for contact information and whether people have pets or special needs in the event of an evacuation.

We're in good shape here and ready for the fight. Our dyke corridors are cleared of ice and snow and the engineers are inspecting the corridor next week. Dyke elevations will be staked following the April 11 flood report, this will be used as the "working" flood report.

We are modelling our dyke construction organization after one established on Kingston Crescent in 2009. The logistics are being managed by Trek Geotechnical, a consulting engineering firm.

109 Winnipeggers told to build sandbag dikes by Sunday
By: Bartley Kives
Posted: 04/4/2011 4:14 PM

WINNIPEG - The flood fight in Winnipeg has officially started, as the city is asking 109 low-lying properties to build sandbag dikes by Sunday evening.
The rapid rise of the Red River over the weekend has led the city to move up its flood-fighting schedule.
That means the city will deliver sandbags to 109 out of the 560 properties on its protection list over the next few days, as soon as the property owners are ready, said public works flood coordinator Scott Payne.
About 30 of these properties must complete their dikes by Friday. The remaining 80, at slightly higher elevations, have until Sunday, Payne said.

Red to rise to near-record levels next week in Fargo: forecasters
Crest possible in Winnipeg between May 6 and 13
By: Bartley Kives
Posted: 04/4/2011 1:00 PM

Weather forecasters in the U.S. predict the Red River could rise within three feet of its record peak as early as a week from today.
In an update issued at noon, the U.S. National Weather Service predicts the Red could rise above 38 feet by Monday, April 11. During the 2009 flood – a record for Fargo – the Red River levels crested at 40.82 feet.

The Red River is at 25 feet in Fargo right now and is rising slightly faster than expected last week, mainly due to accelerated snowmelt, the weather service says.
"The river will continue rising to near 32.8 feet by Saturday evening. Additional rises to between 38 and 40 feet are possible during the April 11 to 13 time period," the weather service said in a bulletin.
The city is planning to protect against a 42-foot crest. The weather service said in March there was a 50 per cent chance of the crest exceeding 40.5 feet.

Red officially reaches flood level; volunteers wanted
By: Bartley Kives
Posted: 04/6/2011 2:55 PM

WINNIPEG - The Red River in Winnipeg has finally reached unofficial flood level.
As of 4 p.m., the Red River had risen to 18 feet above normal winter ice levels at the James Avenue monitoring station. While the Red remains well within its banks inside the city, 18 feet James is the arbitrary level city officials consider a flood.

It is up over 20 feet this morning, way up in my yard. I imagine some people are getting nervous.

Real-time levels here:

The flows have just started to build in Saskatchewan. This is just outside of Regina. This water will end up in Winnipeg in a week or so.

This would never happen, too dangerous for the operator.

There must have been 50 people on the Redwood bridge just now waiting for it to go.

Ness closure expected due to surging Sturgeon Creek
By: Staff Writer
Posted: 04/9/2011 1:44 PM

While the Red and Assiniboine rivers have been getting the lion’s share of flood-watchers’ attention this spring, Sturgeon Creek is about to make its mark.
The often-overlooked tributary is expected to flow over Ness Avenue later today, causing the road to close.
