Crisis, your post is essentially blaming the victim. There is no excuse for EllisDon's behavior if it is as described. It's the equivalent logic of blaming rape on the victim because she didn't know the man who asked her out was a rapist.

Yes, the legal system does suck, and it is far too hard to get justice.

dsmmace, with the increase of a maximum claim to $25,000, I highly recommend small claims court to you. It is pretty straight forward for simple unpaid bills. Just go after each invoice separately as best you can. You may not get all your money, but you may get most, and when the judge adds on interest for you it feels greatly satisfying.

From Facebook, showing detail of front deck and steps -- presumably restaurant patio will take up a portion of the space:

Love it! It appears that they copper is starting to oxidize? I think it will look even better when it gets dark.

City of Saskatoon officially takes keys for Remai Modern building
Restaurant company Oliver & Bonacini will partner with gallery, working towards fall opening

The City of Saskatoon says it has crossed a major threshold in the opening of the Remai Modern Art Gallery.

On Wednesday, the municipality announced it now officially has control of the building, and can soon start moving art into the gallery.

The Remai Modern has been plagued with construction delays for years. The gallery will still need several months to prepare and is aiming for a fall opening.

"Once we know the air quality, heating and humidity levels are where they must be, we can begin the complex process of moving art into the building," said board chair Alain Gaucher.

Award-winning restaurant

Meanwhile, nationally known Oliver & Bonacini Hospitality will be setting up food services at the gallery.

"We can be assured of some exciting things on the menu," said Remai Modern CEO Gregory Burke.

The company's Canoe restaurant in Toronto recently placed eighth in Canada's Top 100 Restaurants. Co-founder Michael Bonacini is a celebrity chef, cookbook author and a judge on CTV's MasterChef Canada.

Oliver & Bonacini already provides catering services to the Royal Ontario Museum and TIFF Bell Lightbox theatre.

The restaurant and bar will employ around 50 people.

Wow... sounds like the restaurant will be no slouch.

Any idea why this copper is expected to oxidize to be a darker brown, when buildings like the BC Parliament have turned green? Lack of seawater, maybe?

It has more to do with the copper alloy used to make it. Hope this answers your question there n8o.

Not sure who has instagram, but if you don't you can check out a night photo of the gallery lit up at this link:

Looks pretty amazing at night so far. That mesh really creates a nice texture. If anyone can get a better quality photo at night posted better than this one that would be great.

I like the clouds in blue sky reflected in top floor windows. Also like that night shot that was shared. It is a very striking addition to S'toon's architecture. It will be a very impressive presence when Riverlanding No1 and Alt hotel are completed adjacent to it!

Remai Modern targets June moving day

Phil Tank, Saskatoon StarPhoenix
Published on: April 18, 2017 | Last Updated: April 18, 2017 4:44 PM CST

Staff of the Remai Modern Art Gallery of Saskatchewan plan to move into the new building at River Landing in early June.

At some point after that, gallery officials and the board of directors will decide on the official opening date, gallery executive director and CEO Gregory Burke said in an email on Tuesday.

The City of Saskatoon and the gallery board announced on March 29 that the building had been turned over from the construction contractor, EllisDon. However, work continues inside the new building, Burke said.

Staff remain at the Mendel Art Gallery building on Spadina Crescent, which was closed to the public nearly two years ago.

The handover of the new building was announced two months after EllisDon said it had achieved “substantial completion” of the delayed and over-budget project on Jan. 29.

The city owns the building, but the gallery is operated by a board appointed by city council.

In the March 29 news release, board chair Alain Gaucher said the gallery continues to aim for a fall 2017 opening. The board advised city council last year that it would take eight months after substantial completion was reached to prepare the gallery so it could open to the public.

During talks last week to revise the 2017 budget in light of a $9-million shortfall created by the provincial budget, several city councillors asked whether more money could be saved at the gallery.

Coun. Randy Donauer said with neither the Mendel nor the new gallery open, residents wonder why the Remai Modern needs more money this year.

In his email, Burke said the gallery “is working collaboratively with the City of Saskatoon on issues related to the 2017 budget.”

When the trees leaf out, we need to get some quality pictures on here. Some of these pictures are really not doing it justice.

I agree with the suggestion in the article saying the fees should be very low, find donors and fundraising to cover the other fees. Getting a higher volume of people into the building is a lot better. If not, at least do something like the MoMA does and have friday evenings free entry or something. And yes there has been a donation for a few days of free entry already but it should be a weekly thing, not once a month.
