If this project were to go through, it would be pretty iconic for the city IMO.

Don't be so negative. I think it is very possible that it will be finished by June 2017, but it is probably more likely to be closer to 2018.

No way this is done by June 2017. 2.5ish years to first build the sales centre, then sell the units. then finish building it. It'll take closer to 3 years just to build this thing. At least 2. Maybe then can have the podium finished, and some units, if they hurry up and go. I want this thing to go ahead as much as anybody. Just being realistic here. Unless they have some super secret contracts in place and they'll be announcing a miracle.

The time span (start date/finish date) for this projects construction, "if it indeed does reach a point where it does proceed", did change with an article posted a while back in the Construction Thread.

Article: Dated 2014-09-25
http://renx.ca/winnipegs-live-work-power-play/

Quote:
The smallest units will be just around $200,000,” Myers says, adding buyers will have 11 different floor plans to choose from.

“And penthouses will be $1 million and up, and totally customizable, so if they wanted 3,000 to 4,500 square feet over two stories, we will accommodate that.”

With construction expected to begin in 2016 with a 2019 completion date, Fortress is anticipating SkyCity will need pre-sales of about 150 and 200 units to get project fully underway

I was in the area earlier today and noticed that the parking lot on the SkyCity site is nearly empty. Is this just a result of growing vacancies in the office building or is there something more to it?

No problem BJ, It does sound more realistic if it does actually move forward.

I'd love to speculate but I'm trying to keep my posts to information that can be verified.
Whichever way this whole proposal goes I expect them to be very tight lipped and careful with what comes out in the media.

I missed this snippet from the article the first time I posted it, others may have caught it.

Quote:
In addition, Myers says Fortress will be actively marketing the project to investors outside Winnipeg once sales start, anticipated to be in the spring.
From the quote, I'll assume the pre-sales start has been pushed into the spring of 2015, not this fall, as previously mentioned in other updates.

Pretty sure if the market stays like this it will get built. We were all thinking the same about Glasshouse and it finally came. Same with DCondos. We never thought we would get a new arena or Stadium either. This is a mega project by Winnipeg standards , so I expect a slow slow start. But for the companies invested into it. This would either kill them if not built or if built would raise their status greatly as it truly is one of a kind building and would stand out for decades.

Downtown tower project to be revamped

http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/bus...ce=d-more-news

A proposed downtown development -- the 53-storey Sky City Centre condominium/retail/office tower -- will look different than what was envisioned, but how much different won't be revealed until next year.

Based on the article, most units will have a balcony and the building will be topped off with a 9 storey glass-wrapped crown. I'm liking it already. The more I looked at the original design, the more I disliked it. It will be interesting to see.

So basically the initial glossy rendering was a cocktail napkin drawing?

Murray McNeill will literally print anything. This project and these guys are all completely full of shit. They've been announcing projects left and right since this one. There's nobody paying attention to anything except raising money from idiots.

I'm more or less happy they confirmed the sales/display centre.
It aligns with the previous article a month ago with the pre-sales start moved to March/April 2015 with a potential start date of 2016.

Quote:
Myers said they have to build a sales office/display suite in a storefront space at 283 Garry St. Work on that is expected to get underway in the next 45 days.
