The city decided not to remove the old langevin bridge, and thus did not require a 4th street flyover connection, though it wasn't a bad idea.

Had the flyover been built as in the drawing, it would have been impossible for eastbound traffic on memorial to cross into downtown from this area, likely placing a staggering traffic load on the lower deck of the center street bridge.

Just imagine, if it had been clad in reflective glass, you could catch one mean tan just lying around in Central Memorial Park...
Part of the reason it doesn't look wide enough is because it's drawn on the wrong block. The tower was supposed to stretch from the north edge of the train tracks north across 9th avenue and from the western edge of fourth street to halfway down the 600 block of ninth avenue, over top of what is now the 5th street subway, which hadn't been constructed yet, if I recall. It's still a good illustration though.

The structure does not look as though it would have been plausible unless it were constructed of plate steel for the majority of it's height, and even then, wind loads and sway would have been excessive. It would have been 300 feet taller than the world trade center (700 ft if you don't include the WTC radio tower) though not as tall as the burj dubai (which is estimated to be between 2600 and 3300 ft; no one knows with certainty)

I had no idea there were so many cancelled projects from the early 80's.

Maybe BVS wouldn't have looked so brutal (no pun intended) with this glass addition. Looks like it could have been an atrium?

The concept is great! Would be nice to see the concept resurected with some mixed use in the square. Anybody know if the reason why the development didn't occur is developer initiated or city initiated?

Found this on Flickr, taken by jhails on May 25, 2007. Amazing to think that these models are still kicking around. This one is Alberta Plaza:

These are definately going into my National Museum of Architecture, Planning, and Design (NMAPD)... as examples of Calgary Architecture during the last boom *rubs hands*

Heh, depends on who is going to spend $31 Megabucks buying that piece of land...

What I do know is... that this looks like a new skyline rendering:

But that topic is for another thread

It's in the making, but I'll post it when I'm done
As for L&M, do you think they will be the first victims, now that Skytower is starting back up?
Perhaps City Centre missed the cycle and will be added to the list (hope not).
