India chimney toll rises further

More bodies have been recovered from the site of a building collapse in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh, bringing the current death toll to 36.

Officials warn the toll could rise further as rescuers continue to comb the ruins of part of a power plant which collapsed on Wednesday.

A chimney caved in on workers during construction at a thermal power plant in Korba district, officials say.

It is not yet clear what caused the accident.

Rescue workers are continuing to search for bodies in debris at the site.

A local trade union leader, Somnath Banerjee, said there were "55-60 people working on the chimney and about the same number beneath the chimney in [the] canteen, office and store house."

"There is an awful stench in the air, you can't stand there without a mask. Bits of bodies have been coming out dismembered," he said.

Correspondents say there is still confusion over how many labourers were in the vicinity when the huge chimney being built at the power plant collapsed.

There was heavy rain and lightning when the accident took place, and some eyewitnesses said labourers who were not working were sheltering close to the construction site, our correspondent says.

Cranes and heavy earth-moving equipment are being used to shift the remains of the collapsed chimney.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh said a judicial inquiry had been ordered into the accident.

He also announced compensation for the victims

State officials said the management of the company building the plant were likely to face charges.

A recent report by the UN's International Labour Organisation said that nearly 50,000 Indians die from work-related accidents or illness every year.

Seems odd, wonder how they still construct chimneys in India. A climbing form type shouldn't have an issue. Additionally, if it was being built properly, it shouldn't even have the potential to collapse. I've watched 3 chimneys being built, all 650ft all and during construction we had wind guts of 70+mph and never had an issue.
