@jd3189 Your note is so relevant.
I personally carefully visited the ruins of Pompeii as some part of our ancient empire tour. We had to read a couple of books before, to better appreciate what we would see over there.
It was surely interesting, but we hardly stayed in downtown Naples. It's still super gritty and the French wimps are scared of it because of gangs supposedly ill-treating tourists.
However, my elder brother took his family (including kids) over there for a longer stay last summer. They were positively astonished, saying Naples is surprisingly sophisticated in its (still gritty) urban fabric. And they had no trouble at all over there anyway. Everyone would be friendly.
They'd be gradually refurbishing it, as slowly as the Italian/Euro economy would allow it.
We all agree on saying that Naples is seriously underrated, whereas Florence is overrated because it's culturally the cradle of the European Renaissance, which is equivalent to the end of the painful Middle Ages (early 16th century).
That's why the prestige exaggeratedly granted to Florence.
