Ground broken for The Lumen at Playhouse Square, billed as largest downtown residential project in 40 years

Updated 2:35 PM; Posted Apr 5, 4:31 PM

By Olivera Perkins, The Plain Dealer operkins@plaind.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Groundbreaking was held Thursday for The Lumen at Playhouse Square, a 34-story, 318-unit apartment building.

This Playhouse Square rising star is expected to make its grand entrance in the summer of 2020, according to officials for the nation's second largest performing arts center after Broadway. The 602,000-square-foot apartment building, which will stand 396 feet, is the focal point of the what Playhouse Square officials say is the largest residential project in downtown Cleveland in 40 years.

Playhouse Square District officials said the building's name was chosen "to reflect the energy surrounding Playhouse Square," the important role light plays in theater as well as to pay tribute to another Playhouse Square star: the GE Chandelier. The one-acre site at the corner of Euclid Avenue and East 17th Street will also include 528 parking spaces.

Looks like they've finished pouring the caissons, won't be too long before downtown Cleveland gets another tower crane

yikes -- steel beams broke off a crane of the almost topped out lumen tower yesterday and fell into an adjacent garage.

obviously it caused some chaos in the playhouse square part of downtown, but thankfully no one was hurt and the shows went on in the theaters last night.

Do you have the vacancy rates for the newer buildings like Beacon, May, and Lumen?

@KevinBarryTV

Asks for occupancy numbers for individual buildings are generally rejected.

BUT, The Lumen told me that as of Aug 5th (when I asked) there were 53 signed leases/approved applicants out of 318 units. The building had just opened on July 19.
