It's not the same location as the Buster Keaton/Jimmy Durante movie. Several sources, including the comments for the video clip above, say this was filmed in Echo Park, with Wikipedia saying the cross street is Echo Park Avenue. I took the Googlemobile for a quick spin, but didn't find any matches in my brief search. The scenes with the police officer at the bottom of the hill were obviously filmed somewhere else.
The scene with the Copper looks like it was shot at Echo Park and Delta, the Apt. building is still there and matches up.

Thanks for the location identification, Hollywood Graham. Here's how it appeared in 'Three Little Beers'.

And this is a more recent picture of Echo Park Avenue at Delta Street. I had to go back to 2012 to get the Googlemobile on the correct side of the street. The white house on the left of the screengrab above is also still standing down towards Scott Avenue.

GSV

Here's the hill used in 'Three Little Beers'.

This is meant to be the opposite side of the hill, but, of course, it may well have been somewhere else.

Thanks for trying Hoss.
I was sure John Bengtson at 'silentlocations' would have covered this particular location....but as far as I can tell, he hasn't.

The area at the bottom of the 'mystery' hill is a bit unusual with the two parallel streets (in front and behind the grocery store)
It's interesting that the back street is a good deal higher than the street that runs in front of the store.

Again, thanks for trying.

I've been trying to figure where this 'mid-century' parking shelter and parking lot fit into the scheme of things at the Hollywood Bowl.*
(the seller had the slide reversed...so I flipped it)

1953

ebay

Do you think this 'half moon' shelter appears in any vintage aerials (hint:hoss)

detail

There's even a fountain.

*A co-worker's in-laws ran the parking concession at the Hollywood Bowl back in the 1980s, so i know there were various parking lots of different sizes.
It was quite a confusing configuration. -

I think this is it. The outer semi-circle is visible on the 1952 image, but the one below from 1954 shows the central island.

Historic Aerials

The area gets progressively covered with trees, but the semi-circle can still be seen in the 1994 image. As far as I can tell, it's gone by 2003.

That was fast! Thanks Hoss.

I was hoping it was still there.

That must have been the bus parking lot. The lots my friends ran were on the opposite side of Highland Ave.

google_earth

They let us park for free.

-but just think what was destroyed for all those lots. Isn't the top one where the French Village used to be? -or am I thinking of something else

There's no location in the description of this Julius Shulman photoset, but luckily it's marked as the Coronado Wilshire Center on the front . The words "Wayne Alan Apts." are visible on the building behind (see below). The "Hotel" blade sign on the far right belonged to the Parkway Hotel at 682 S Coronado Street. It's now the Coronado Inn. This is "Job 802: Mobil Station, glass blocks (Los Angeles, Calif.),1950".

Here's a better view of the glass blocks. That must be part of the Hershey Arms on the right.

And here's the inside of the service station.

All from Getty Research Institute

The name "Wayne Alan" didn't ring any bells, but the address of 667 S Carondelet Street was familiar. It's the same building that tovangar2 posted about under its original name, "The Georgelle", in post #32617. That post also covers the Coronado Inn among many other extant gems in the area. When I Googled that name "Wayne Alan", I also got a lot of results for the "Alan Wayne Apartment Building" at the same address. I don't know when or why the name swapped around.

GSV

This office block now stands on the site of the old Mobilgas station. The address is 2500 Wilshire Boulevard, and I think it was built in 1970.

The view above, taken from the Hotel Shoreham, the towers of which can be seen in HossC's top Shulman shot at far left, takes in the Nicholas Rice house at 2520 Wilshire--site of the Mobil station--as well as the Hershey Arms; at top center is the newly completed Bryson. Effie Neustadt's house at 2515 Wilshire is at right; 2525 is next door, with the Rampart Apartments rising just to its left. From the Times of May 18, 1913.

More on the lot here: http://wilshireboulevardhouses.blogs...e-see-our.html

I would say that the mystery hill is Ewing St. and the bottom is Echo Park Av. The present building there resembles the store some and the house to the left also. The road through to the other street is now paved. The illusion of the street being higher could be because of a telephoto lens. My opinion.

gsv

Is this the spot you're talking about H_Graham?

I remember we visited that old store and even the green house (I believe Tetsu pointed it out) a couple years ago in one of my 'mystery' slide post.

sgrab

the house doesn't seem to match, but it does appear to have had several additions over the years.

gsv

perhaps in the movie, where only seeing this part (red arrow). -just a guess.

gsv

but it's still missing the dormer (is visible in the film)

then i thought maybe we were seeing this portion in the Keaton movie.

gsv

-but none of my scenarios seem to work out correctly.

"This old curiosity shop fronts one of the main tourist highways leading into Los Angeles." ca.1932

eBay

I like the pig on the roof.

further info.

I wish they had included the name of the shop or the highway number.

I think you are right, they don't really look correct even with additions. Besides there is no street right in back of the store.

Very intriguing Tourmaline.

The 1917 film is lost (except for a few short fragments), and there doesn't seem to be many stills, except for Theda posing in her famous snake-boobs costume.

Pretty saucy stuff for 1917!

Here's one more for good measure.

I found an article titled "Newport Beach in Film", that claims the big battle scene was filmed there.

Showing at Clunes Auditorium, downtown Los Angeles.

I thought there might be images of the barge battle in this ad. -but no.

Looking north on Brand Boulevard at East Fairview in Glendale. The Crocker bank is now Citizens Business Bank while the steeple belongs to St. Marks Episcopal Church.

Cheers,
