Huh, this is unexpected. Looks like Friedman Properties and DLR Group is planning a new mixed-use tower in River North on the current site of the current Engine Co. 42 fire station. A new fire station will be built as a part of the tower's base.

Here's a blurry, conceptual image of what they are planning when they filed with the city.

That's cool. I like the idea of municipal services being integrated into mixed-use buildings of significant density.

I like it! Some more "Optima Red" in river north. Maybe a whole new trend starting.

There's a few othere fire houses around the city that could use some upgrades as well.

I'm glad the city is pursuing these public-private partnerships as well as mixed-use developments (like the three library/housing projects announced a month or so ago). Certainly makes sense in the greater downtown area. I'm curious (and hoping) that the new West Loop library building is dressed up a bit from the current state. Much better location than the Coyne College site though.

Does having a fire station downstairs reduce your insurance rates?

Amen.

Pay a developer to bury that fucker, give them a slice of the site to build tall on, turn the rest into that long-promised park.

I'm not sure the city could do anything with the Post Office because post offices are federal buildings.

I was just about to post that fire station concept. Really interesting, hadn't seen anything like that before.
There's an article on it:

Regarding the fire station proposal, the city of Madison just did something similar with our downtown fire station headquarters. The vehicle bays were left as is but they connect with a new private highrise building that also has all the office space for the HQ as well as the actual station area.

Not to go all NIMBY on us, but I'm a bit relieved to hear this. He's killed the two proposals that would each take out about a half-block each of historic building stock, whether a motivating factor or not.

Plenty of other sites in the area to build on – the small/mid-sized historic buildings really need to stay to break up all the gigantic parking podiums from the last 20 years.
