Nordstrom to open 1st full dept store in Manhattan

The arrival of Nordstrom, envied by rivals for its top-notch customer service, will increase the competition in Manhattan, home to such department stores as Macy's and its higher-tone sister, Bloomingdales, and to Saks Fifth Avenue. But experts believe Nordstrom also will inject new energy into what's already a retail mecca.

The new store will open in either 2017 or 2018 at 225 W. 57th Street, between Broadway and Seventh Avenue, just south of Central Park, under an agreement signed with real estate company Extell Development Co., the Seattle-based retailer said. The store will be at the base of a skyscraper still in the planning stages that is to include pricey residences and a hotel.

Pete Nordstrom said the search was complicated by the company's need for a particular configuration plus space for a loading dock, among other requirements. At about 285,000 square feet on seven floors, the new store will be almost twice as big as Nordstrom's average store.

The Nordstrom store will be 285,000 square feet and occupy seven stories at the base of what will become Manhattan's tallest residential building, to be built on 57th Street, near 7th Avenue. The store is part of a deal with Extell Development Co, the upscale chain announced at a press conference on Thursday.

A full-service New York department store will give the chain exposure to the millions of tourists who flock to Manhattan and have bolstered business at rivals such as Saks Fifth Avenue , Macy's Inc Bloomingdale's, Neiman Marcus Group Inc's Bergdorf Goodman and Tiffany & Co. "It's our desire to make this the absolute best Nordstrom store there is because we need to do that to be able to compete on this stage," Pete Nordstrom, the chain's president of merchandising, told reporters. He expects the Manhattan store to be the department store chain's highest grossing location.

Nordstrom will own its space at the Manhattan store, which it expects will create 1,000 jobs. In 2010, Nordstrom opened a popular Rack outlet store in New York's Union Square. Company executives at the event said they are not ruling out a second Manhattan department store at some point.

Extell Announces Agreement to Build 285,000 Square-Foot Flagship Store on 57th Street

For Nordstrom, the agreement with Extell marks its full-line store entrance into the New York City marketplace. Its 7-story department store will comprise the base of a distinctive mixed-use, retail, hotel and high-rise residential tower still in the planning stages by Extell. Nordstrom views the development as a great opportunity to serve customers within the highly accessible, heavily trafficked and growing West Side retail scene.

The 40,000 square foot block-through site, which fronts on the northern side of 57th Street between Broadway and Seventh Avenue and extends to 58th Street, once housed the original Hard Rock Cafe. The parcel was assembled by Extell President Gary Barnett over a period of nearly a decade. According to Mr. Barnett, excavation work on the site could begin as early as the first quarter of next year.

"We have enjoyed great success at ONE57 and therefore decided to develop another luxury tower along the 57th Street corridor," said Gary Barnett. "We are pleased to have Nordstrom as our anchor tenant in this new project and to be able to bring this long anticipated flagship store to Manhattan."

After decades of pondering a move to New York, Seattle-based retailer Nordstrom Inc. will open its first full-line location two blocks south of Columbus Circle, at 225 W. 57th St., between Seventh and Eighth avenues.

The department store's requirements included ceiling heights of at least 25 feet and open floorplates without central elevator cores, and that combination made most existing buildings unworkable, Mr. Trulson said. Nordstrom considered several high-profile developments for a future home, including a high-rise condo tower planned for the former Drake Hotel site and the Hudson Yards project. "The possibilities for [the Extell] site are just better," Mr. Nordstrom said.

Excavation on the site's 40,000-square-foot footprint could begin by the first quarter of 2013. The tower will include additional retail space, a hotel and residential units. The hotel portion is expected to create 250 permanent jobs, said George Arzt, spokesman for the developer.

The tower, which will be completed in 2017 or 2018, and sits between Seventh Avenue and Broadway, was just “better” for Nordstrom than the Hudson Yards, where Nordstrom also considered putting a Manhattan store, Nordstrom’s director of merchandizing, Peter Nordstrom said. The department store will buy the floors as a commercial condominium, but would not say how much the company would pay. Nordstrom executives will assist in decisions such as who the architect of the apartment, hotel and retail tower will be, Barnett said.

The new Nordstrom’s will likely benefit from residential developments, such as One57, also developed by Extell. In recent weeks, it had been rumored that the department store was considering setting up shop in One57.

Barnet said Nordstrom “will anchor an iconic tower with spectacular views of the Park, city and beyond.” He also joked that his family’s first concern upon hearing he was negotiating with Nordstrom was whether or not they would get a discount.

Following the press conference, Barnett told The Real Deal that the tower, whose height and number of apartments and hotel rooms have not been decided on, would use union construction. He also said he did not plan to seek tax incentives from the city for the development.

Right now, the tallest Nordstrom in the country stands five stories high, so the Manhattan flagship will be a record-breaker for the company. Nordstrom and Extell haven't selected an architect yet (they were actually planning to interview candidates this afternoon), so it's impossible to know what the store will look like, outside or in.

But Nordstrom execs do say they're planning to make the top floors interesting enough to draw in shoppers, and because they're working with so much space, they're thinking about setting up multiple different shopping environments within the store. President of merchandising Peter Nordstrom told the assembled crowd, "It's our desire to make this the absolute best Nordstrom store there is."

So this building will use older methods. That means unlike most buildings today it would go back to methods used 60-80 years ago. If that is true this building is going to look an awful lot like the Empire State Building.

Where did you get they were using older methods? Using union workers doesnt have anything to do with the design of the tower.

Unless Robert AM Stern is the architect this building will be all glass for sure. Didnt Herzog and de Meuron win the design bid? Maybe that was scrapped once Nordstroms signed on.

Yeah, sounds like the store will be very impressive, even though it's a lot smaller than Manhattan's largest department stores. Nothing like a flagship in Manhattan, and it will generate even more street activity in an already busy area. It's also great that financing is being put into place. We now wait for a design, though groundbreaking could happen before we get one. A look at the facts gathered today:

I am talking about the store and probably the building. Most buildings today are built with a core and an outer wall. This building will not have a core but a grid of steel beams inside the building to hold it up.

Yeah, the department store does add to the usual excitement for this type of development. People who aren't necessarily into skyscrapers will be excited for this project. In fact, the skyscraper itself is more of an afterthought in the media.

For years there have been rumors that Nordstrom would open a full line store in Manhattan. For many years they have operated stores surrounding Manhattan. In Westchester, Long Island and New Jersey, Nordstrom is a successful anchor to major malls in the greater New York City area but not in New York City. The many rumors placed them on Park Avenue, Fifth Avenue, in Soho, near the West Side’s High Line project, and on the Upper West Side. But the day has now arrived: Nordstrom has announced that a 285,000 square foot will open in 2018 at 225 West 57th Street. The store will span seven floors in a mixed-use, retail, hotel and high-rise residential tower.

The location is terrific for this new flagship store. It is near major subway and bus lines, as well as the world famous Carnegie Hall and Columbus Circle where the Time Warner Center has excellent shopping and dining facilities. The location will draw both international and U.S. visitors. The move will change the dynamics of New York City putting greater emphasis on the West side. I can visualize many other fashion stores moving to the West 57th Street location by the time the store opens. The store will compete with Bloomingdale’s, Macy’s, and all the fashion stores in Upper Manhattan. No doubt, Nordstrom’s fabled service will be copied by others.

It’s official: Seattle’s best clothier is finally opening a big store in the Big Apple. Nordstrom confirmed that it will open a long-awaited Manhattan flagship at Broadway and West 57th Street. The Post first reported the location Tuesday on its website. At a splashy SoHo press conference yesterday with Mayor Bloomberg at his side, Pete Nordstrom, president of merchandising for the luxe retailer, said the 285,000-square-foot store will stretch seven stories high — two more than the next-tallest shop in the 231-store chain. “We fully expect this to be our most productive store,” Nordstrom said.

Officials said it will be located at 225 W. 57th St., anchoring a mixed-use skyscraper that will be erected by New York real-estate mogul Gary Barnett of Extell Development. Bloomberg called the new Midtown tower, which is slated to open in 2018, “a smart fashion statement,” gushing that it will create 1,000 new jobs and 5,000 construction jobs.

Nordstrom told The Post that he was seduced by “the amount of people and the possibilities” in the area surrounding 225 W. 57th, which is just a block south of Columbus Circle.
