Is it just me or does anyone else find the use of FC in American soccer to be annoying? I get its origins but in America, its usage just seems disingenuous and contrived.

I think it's a certainty that Seattle is going to be a great hockey town.

Definitely disingenuous since they're not really clubs. But meh, no more annoying than New England Revolution or New York New Jersey Red Bull.

as a league, MLS has the dumbest (and most repetitive) team names among the NA major sports leagues.

there are a few i like though:

portland timbers

san jose earthquakes

colorado rapids

i also like vancouver whitecaps, but then they went and stuck the ubiquitous and wholly unnecessary "FC" at the end. why?

Oh don't even get me started on "singular" names like the examples you cited, or also TB Lightning, CO Avalanche, MIA Heat, or Philadelphia Union.

Congrads Seattle!

I just heard on the radio that the NHL approved a team starting the 2021-2022 season. This will make for a great natural rivalry with Vancouver.
Now we just need the Eastern conference to get the Nordiques back in Quebec City.

In keeping with the theme, the new MLS team will be the Amazon Grunge.

Very happy to have another NHL team in the Pacific division! Arizona moves over to the central and now there are 4 eight team divisions. Also, the expansion fee went up to $650 mil from the $500 mil Vegas paid 3 years ago. Crazy!

PSV owns the Crew and wants them in ATX. They have the MLS' blessings to relocate. The only thing that stood in their way was opposition in the Austin city council but that's been resolved now and they've given Precourt their blessings to come to ATX.

Of course Ohio is threatening a lawsuit but that won't go anywhere. The Crew will play in ATX next season. The stadium in ATX will begin construction soon. The Crew will play at a temporary venue in ATX until their new digs are done.

Ummm..NO! Guess again! Crew stays in Cbus, Austin gets a new team.

Apparently the Seattle NHL ownership registered these 13 potential names as trademarks:
  • Seattle Cougars - Cue the Cougar Town hot mom puns.
  • Seattle Eagles - Jesus no there are too many already #boring
  • Seattle Emeralds - I guess this is a good name. Unique at least. For some reason it seems uninspired to me.
  • Seattle Evergreens - Ditto. Fine, objectively a good name. Just kinda boring.
  • Seattle Firebirds - The Seattle Phoenix? No. Why?
  • Seattle Kraken - YES THIS IS AN AMAZING NAME PLEASE DO IT!
  • Seattle Rainiers - Emeralds & Evergreen version 3
  • Seattle Renegades - Random & generic.
  • Seattle Sea Lions - I like this. It's basically unique, location specific, and alliterative. And unlike Emeralds etc it doesn't leave me with a giant meh. I guess it seems less contrived or something?
  • Seattle Seals - Second best option after Kraken. Alliterative and on totally point. Slightly preferable to Sea Lions because it's not like "hey we're the Sea Hawks but different get it!"
  • Seattle Sockeyes - Solid option. Unique, cool sounding word. I had look up what a sockeye is, but I was just recently thinking that college mascots like Buckeyes and Terrapins are so much more interesting than generic pro mascots, so points here for that.
  • Seattle Totems - Asking for trouble. Even if it wasn't, it's the same category of meh as Emeralds etc.
  • Seattle Whales - A fine, safe choice. But if you want a basic well-known animal why do Whales when Seals is alliterative and thus superior?

^^ Seals and Sockeyes are cool. I can see a "sock em Sockeyes!" type of thing, and also can see fans barking like seals for the "Seals" lol.

i like "Seattle Sockeyes".

a nice local tie-in, and the word "sockeye" sounds appropriately violent for hockey.

The problem with the Seals is that the Golden State Seals were already a thing before moving in the 70s, same goes for Whales/Whalers.

I personally like the Kraken.

I'd go with "Sockeyes," too. But for a selfish reason.

The Boise ECHL team is called the Idaho Steelheads, and has been affiliated with the Dallas Stars for a few years. It'd be a more natural fit to be affiliated with the Seattle team, and a Seattle Sockeyes/Idaho Steelheads partnership would provide a nice, natural, regional, and fishy correlation.

New proposal for Crew Stadium in Columbus downtown west of the Arena District. To be called 'Confluence Village", mixed use with 20,000 seat stadium, 270,000 square feet of commercial and over 800 residential units.

I'm really, really hoping for "Kraken" and if any city could pull that off, it'd be Seattle.

Todd, any thoughts on an up-and-coming rivalry (if any) between the Crew and FC Cincinnati?

I like the Sockeyes, Kraken, and Totems. I think of the Sea Lions as more of a Bay Area thing, with the Seals back in the day.

Reposting the Sockeye concept jerseys from earlier in this thread.

Also these are old Seattle Totems jerseys:

Whatever name they choose, it has to be green.
