I think we finally found an apartment (what a horrible experience renting is here)... but we'll be in Moiliili, 24th floor, view out toward Waikiki and Ala Moana across to the Manoa valley. It's sweet... very Hon Kong-ish at night.
Yeah, the renting situation is terrible... that's pretty much why I said screw the city, I'm living on the coast! And by all means post your pics, seems that the number of forumers here keeps growing all the time!

Well, that depends on the kind of luau you're going to. A lot of the hotels all over the island (waikiki, north shore and koolina) put on luaus for the tourists with hula dancing, suckling pigs, etc. Haven not actually been to any of these (hey, I live here! I've never para sailed, gone to the Polynesian cultural center or tried to surf ala moana either) I don't think you have to bring your food. You either pay up front or its included in the hotel tab.

I can't see how it would be hard to crash one though, since all the beaches are public property.

I've been to a number of private luaus ranging from just me and a bunch of local friends having a traditional type cookout on the beach, a wedding and a family reunion me and a friend crashed, thinking it was the aforementioned wedding (it look a couple hours before we realized our mistake- they were cool though )

Those things are a strictly byob affair for me, since I dunno where you can get whole pig. My friends actually hunted the ones we had in the Pali

If you haven't made plans already, recommend saying at Hale Koa in Waikiki, or Royal Alakai at Hickam. But unless you're lucky, you need to book far in advance

I'll try to make time to go there this weekend. I wish I had time to do a walking photo tour of the city

Wow....superb photography of a great city! I love the contrast of colors and the stunning visuals!

I went to Oah'u on a 2 week visit in May 2006 - one of the best vacations ever (a tie with my recent San Francisco one).

Great job!

I just got back from O'ahu and wow it was amazing even for just 4 days of vacation there. Hawaii is crazy with humidity, wow I have not felt such stickyness in my life!
I will have to make a photo thread later on to plug my shots too,
Hawaii is Definetly not a place to see in 4 days. I had to cancell one tour because of time constraints, there went my refund...

Overall, Beautiful Island, now I know the meaning of Paradise!!

Oh and your pictures are wicked! I especially love the clouds and the darkening tone the pictures show especially of the Pali Lookout.
One place I failed to go which I really wanted to see was the Tantalus Lookout.. Do you have pictures from that area?
Is it also accessible at night and the pathways lit?

What about Pearl City?
I may be buying a house there, but I've only been to Hawaii once and that was to Hilo. I've lived in Guam, I need to live on an island again.

Pearl City is roughly the area to the foreground of Century Park Plaza (the two towers you see) with H-1 as the other border, extending to the right of the image.

What you see is the large shopping center (well group of shopping centers.) To the right is the residential areas that extend northward till the Waiawa and Waimano gulches

Its a pretty nice area, close to fwy, shopping, restaurants, parks, etc. Traffic can be a bitch though, since its located at the rough trijunction of H-1, H-2 and Kam hwy

Mahalo!
I figured with traffic, I've seen enough pics of rush hour on H-1, and I've seen the maps many times, it's like Marine Drive (Guam Route 1) on Guam, but I think I'm moving there, I live outside Washington D.C. now and I'm excited. We found a nice 2 bedroom fixer-upper house we're probably going to buy. only $210k
