I think I must've been viewing another thread just before this one with Memphis photos, because you're right, I just looked back through and there's no Memphis!

I'd like to marry my partner of 14 years. Where in the South can I get this most critical of all "wants" in my life? You're looking for the positive, and that's a great attitude--but don't whitewash things. The South doesn't offer "anything anyone could possibly want" like the East and West Coasts do.
What an annoying comment, that isn't even what I was talking about in regards to diversity so good job misreading my commentary and going on a rant about it. I meant the regional culture not the immigrant cultures within it. In regards to gay marriage is all I have to say is I pity you for having to perpetuate hetero-normative social norms and constructs instead of ignoring mainstream culture for trying to make you feel left out because you can't get married, boo hoo. It's an antiquated tradition and you can't even get married in California as it stands right now so big deal...

Great thread & pics especially of South Florida even though it isn't very "southern" but glad you included the area anyways!

Sigh. Not this again.

You can't deny geography, no matter how hard you wish to. Everyone knows that many in South Florida wish to distance themselves from "the South," but you really can't.

One of the hallmarks of a place being "Southern" is the availability of grits in various restaurants - and not just shrimp & grits, which can be found coast to coast now in finer dining places. Just plain grits for breakfast or with fried fish (very Southern) can be found all over South Florida - which makes it truly Southern.

google it if you don't believe me.

what a small world. the photo taken of the bessemer, ala apothecary is just a few doors down from one of my previous most beloved antique shops, which has since gone out of business. it was run by an elderly woman, who used to sit in her rocker and greet everyone, tell them a little about the store, the pieces she had on hand (really nice things from italy, france, and england) in addition to american late 18th and early 19th century pieces. she drove a hard bargain, too. my last visit was the time she informed me that she was calling it quits, at age 87. she wanted me to sit and have a cup of tea, so i did, and enjoyed my three hour visit. so, your photo is fun to see.

as for the south, i think there is a good deal of preoccupation w/ the region. i believe southerners, in general, aren't overly impressed w/ the west coast nor the east. my observation is that southerners are independent and occupied w/ living the lives they wish, not the lives that those who relocate want for the southerners. if the census bureau projections can be believed, they project that over 133 million people will make up their designated south by the year 2025. so, somebody sort of likes the area.

Great photos! I love those pictures of the Birmingham skyline. That is definitely a familiar one. I would like to see like set of photographs of the downtown areas of the larger cities in Alabama and maybe a few smaller towns in between. That would be really cool I am really interested in what Huntsville looks like. I have driven past it on I-65 but have never had the time to go over there I-565.
