What a great shot! Aside from the construction sites, I'm amazed by how cool the Heritage wing of City Hall looks from above.

They are starting to weave the re-bar for the bottom slab; but I think it will take a while. The 'hooks' are all in to ensure the slab is well secured to the underlaying rock. Those hooks appear to be sunk about two metres into the rock and still stick up about a metre. That will be one huge, thick, base slab.

Amazing how long it actually takes to get a project this size above ground.

When might people see a crane on this site?

Can't wait to see the foundation base and the parking garage levels being built up to street level by late spring...

They've already started pouring concrete. I don't know much about the construction process so today I asked one of the guys working on the site what was going on because there was a lot of activity going on in the middle of the hole. He said they were getting ready to put up the crane. He also said there wasn't a crane in Ottawa big enough for the job so they're bringing in a 700 tonne crane from Montreal. It'll cost $87,000 just to move the crane to Ottawa. He said it would probably be as tall as Place Bell.

Considering the current trend in Ottawa, including developments currently in the pipeline that are going to be 30+ stories (SoHo Italia, office towers on the triangle of land north of City Centre), I think there is probably a really good business opportunity for some heavy-equipment company in Ottawa to purchase a couple cranes of this scale.

The base for the crane arrived on Thursday (Dec. 8, 2011) and was lowered into place.

Mean while, the crew kept trying to fill up the hole with truck after truck of concrete. At least enough to hide all those layers of messy re-bars.

As cool as that pic is, it doesn't do justice to the sheer holey awesomeness of that hole.

Quite true. I walk by that hole fairly often, and every time I feel compelled to stop and gape at it (pun intended). It's really something in person!

So awesome that the actual construction is starting up for the bottom level...picking up pace compared to the excavation process...

Nice to see the base of the crane finally in place on its concrete platform today when I walked by the Big Hole.

I'm curious to start a poll on how long everyone thinks until they are at the top floor?

and the best thing is that they are all in different architecture styles. I really like Art Deco, so my pick is The Merit

All of these projects on the go, with the promise of even more coming in the near future, Ottawa's skyline is actually going to get rather large-ish in the near future...
