They are starting to weave the re-bar for the bottom slab; but I think it will take a while. The 'hooks' are all in to ensure the slab is well secured to the underlaying rock. Those hooks appear to be sunk about two metres into the rock and still stick up about a metre. That will be one huge, thick, base slab.
They've already started pouring concrete. I don't know much about the construction process so today I asked one of the guys working on the site what was going on because there was a lot of activity going on in the middle of the hole. He said they were getting ready to put up the crane. He also said there wasn't a crane in Ottawa big enough for the job so they're bringing in a 700 tonne crane from Montreal. It'll cost $87,000 just to move the crane to Ottawa. He said it would probably be as tall as Place Bell.

Considering the current trend in Ottawa, including developments currently in the pipeline that are going to be 30+ stories (SoHo Italia, office towers on the triangle of land north of City Centre), I think there is probably a really good business opportunity for some heavy-equipment company in Ottawa to purchase a couple cranes of this scale.
wow..with 150 elgin, these, the nepean tower after them, the merrit, and the lorne building replacement the area around city hall is going to look VERY different in four years. quite exciting!!

and the best thing is that they are all in different architecture styles. I really like Art Deco, so my pick is The Merit
All of these projects on the go, with the promise of even more coming in the near future, Ottawa's skyline is actually going to get rather large-ish in the near future...
