Detroit River Kayak Trip Pt 3

Detroit River Kayak Trip Pt 1

Detroit River Kayak Trip Pt 2

Check out Steely's kayak tours here:
http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...=Chicago+River

This is a compilation of two recent trips out within a week of each other, On the second trip I followed the American shore until seeing a police boat blocking water access to the Navy Week activities between the Ren Cen and Cobo.

Went under the Ambassador bridge and back. Checked into two or three little coves on the way so there are some land shots too.

Dossin Great Lakes Museum, Belle Isle, Detroit
The Belle Isle Conservatory in the background. You can see the shank and fluke of the Edmund Fitzgerald anchor to the left of the white painted anchor.

The wheelhouse is that of the William Clay Ford, which was powered up in Whitefish Bay when it was asked by the USCG to search for the missing freighter. All they found was debris. This wheelhouse replaced that of an earlier freighter.
There's an interactive webcam on top of the Ford wheel house:

Rounding the western tip of Belle Isle

MacArthur Bridge (but nobody calls it that)

Harbortown and Broadhead Naval Armory

'scuze me while I kiss the water...

Chene Park Amphitheatre

The other side

St Aubin Marina, AKA…

Milliken State Park

The USS Niagara just fired a cannon

At this point I spot a police boat blocking access to the riverfront between the Ren Cen and Cobo. So I head back to the middle of the river.

But the crew of the HMCS Ville De Quebec don't seem to be too concerned about it.

To confuse the issue I'm going to throw in a few from a previous trip, then continue past the Ambassador.

Shooting pictures of people shooting pictures of people....

Near Hiram Walker/ western tip of Belle Isle.
This is a picture of the Loch Ness monster, or something, but I was too busy trying not to let go of my paddle at the time to go after it.

Enjoying the view:

OK, break's over....

Work's coming along on Cobo.

I paddled into here but there are a lot of sharp rocks

Portofino

Under the bridge:

Chewitt Park, a perfect little sheltered cove with a beach and boat launch.

So that's where it's been hiding!
The Oliver Hazard Perry class frigate USS De Wert (FFG-45).
Downriver from the other Navy Week vessels, these sailors will get some of the real Detroit.

It's getting dark faster now. I'm pulling out here:

Caught the twilit skyline while waiting for a lift. Like Russell Crowe said "We weren't lost. We ran out of day"

And so to bed...
This picture was actually taken in 2008 with a model of Canon I had at the time but there's no sign of it in my Flickr photo stream so it is unlikely to ever have been posted here before.

LOVE IT!

specifically, i really dug all the freighter pics. it's cool that because of the narrows created by the detroit river you can actually see all of those big ships up close as they head up and down the river. here in chicago, the shipping channels are so far out in the lake that freighters typically look like little blips out on the horizon.

There's some fantastic perspectives in here. I dig it. The riverfront downtown was heavily patrolled because it's Navy Week in Detroit. They were all over downtown today. Anyway, thank you!
