I wonder if this will start a trend? They've already build Kranspoor in Rotterdam. Disused bridges present an ideal if unusual foundation for buildings, and they're usually in locations with great views.

As long as the bridge isn't terribly damaged or a hazard to navigation, the unused bridges can remain indefinitely.

Here's a similar proposal in Boston:

I love the idea of using old bridges, piers, docks etc. They almost always have a great view and the surroundings really emphasize the building!

Student Learning Centre @ Ryerson University / Snøhetta and ZRPA

Today Ryerson University announced the design of a new Student Learning Centre for their Toronto campus. Designed by Snøhetta in collaboration with Zeidler Partnership Architects of Toronto, the 155,463sqf Student Learning Centre will feature a transparent glass skin that will provide varying light qualities within the interior spaces. Sustainable practices have also been incorporated into the design with 50% of the roof intended to act as a green roof and plans for the building to be LEED Silver compliant. Construction on the building is expected to begin late this year, with a targeted completion date of Winter 2014.

Kind of reminds me of 60's style Miami Modern with a little bit of 80's kitsch thrown in.

coal mine --> cultural centre

Quote:
How do we transcend the carbon era without completely eradicating our history? 51n4e solves this crucial design problem with their stunning C-MINE renovation in Brussels. Formerly the Winterslag coal mine, the old red brick building has been transformed into a 5,000 square meter cultural center and tourist attraction. Instead of doing away with the relics that are emblematic of our sooty past, such as the large mechanical equipment, the firm chose to integrate them into the upgraded facility as a reminder of our evolution. In addition to saving materials and creating the tiniest impact on the environment, C-MINE represents the best of the old and the new.

What with the seating and the circles on the ceiling, my first thought was "oh cool, bumper cars!"
