I find it neither boring or bland, and the food scene here is phenomenal.

Maybe Guido should have gotten out a little more....LOL.

Bruin Brain,
Actually, the city does make an effort to conserve most of the trees by requiring contractors/builders to apply for a permit to allow them to cut down trees - and a hefty fine is the penalty for cutting down certain trees without a permit.

[QUOTE=cactuspunk;2397706]So what density would you call this photograph of Virginia Highlands neighborhood in Atlanta that was posted above?

What you may not know about the homes in VA-HI, is that many of these homes have been subdivided into multiple-unit residences. What used to be single-family dwellings are now homes subdivided into 3, 4, & 5 unit apartments.

That's OK, KC! Besides, it's time for you to come back anyway! Buckhead already looks so different than as pictured in your spectacular photo essay!

GREAT photos! Thanks for bringing them back!

"What you may not know about the homes in VA-HI, is that many of these homes have been subdivided into multiple-unit residences. What used to be single-family dwellings are now homes subdivided into 3, 4, & 5 unit apartments."

While there are homes with lower/terrace level apartments and many new ones with guest houses, there is definately not a trend towards turning single family into multi-unit dwellings.

Great pics! Never seen my city in this way before. You should come back next summer for another photo tour to show the difference in two years.

I just revisted this thread and I must say, I'm just as amazed as I was the first time.

My hometown pride is so huge right now.

Wow this city is just so... weird. I, like others, do not "get" this city. It's definitely one of a kind.

im amazed to see these awesome KC shots keep rising in the photo thread again and again over such a long period of time. additionally, so much has changed (buckhead in particular) since this thread was first posted.

im also intrigued to hear people say they don't "get" atlanta. to say so implies a lack of understanding the basic social, economic and political currents that have driven and shaped 20th century america.

it's pretty simple. in it's rawest form, atlanta has been physically shaped by consistent growth fueled by planes, trains, automobiles, cheap land, low cost of living, opportunity, good weather, accessibility, progressive leadership, location, transportation, entreperneurism, boosterism, higher education, science, goverment, ego, hospitality and a general sense that she "has something to prove".

whats not to get?

I don't get the multiple business centers. People like us would understand where the city center is, but to someone who is just visiting the city, he would might assume one of the numerous clusters of skyscrapers would be the cbd.

It's a city built by cars that seems to be reviving itself. Gorgeous city none the less, but I still cannot figure it out.

I thought most large cities had more than one economic center...a central downtown plus one or more secondary areas.

Well yes, but maybe just in my experience none have been nearly as large as the CBD. The only one I can really think of is Phoenix.
