Construction is underway on the Hope Lodge. Good design for a building with a good purpose

http://www.hopelodgeutah.org

Isaac Riddle | July 30, 2014 | Central City, Salt Lake City READ MORE: http://www.theslcblog.org/?p=668

Construction is underway on the Hope Lodge, a lodge for adult cancer patients run by the American Cancer Society. When completed, the Utah Hope Lodge will be one of 31 lodges throughout the U.S. that provide temporary lodging for patients receiving cancer treatment.

The 63,000 sq. ft. lodge will include 41 private suites, common living and cooking/dining areas, a healing garden and a study. The top floor will have large floor to ceiling windows in the common areas that will provide views of the Salt Lake City and Mount Olympus as well as a balcony that will allow residents to gather outside. Other common areas will include a movie room, library, game room and a multipurpose room.

The Hope Lodge is being built on what was previously a meetinghouse for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on the northwest corner of 100 South and 400 East. Demolition of the 63 year-old meetinghouse was finished this spring. The LDS Church not only donated the site but also the meetinghouse itself. Before demolition, volunteers carefully removed materials from the former meetinghouse that were then donated to Habitat for Humanity, an organization that provides housing for low-income residents...

...Like the nearby expansion of the Ronald McDonald House, the design of the lodge fits in with the surrounding neighborhood. Also like the McDonald house, the lodge will have little setback from the sidewalk helping to create more density and street engagement along 100 South.

Renderings for the Hope Lodge show a rustic typical lodge design but with modern elements, such as large windows and a nature-inspired design used to encourage healing...

Healing Gardens, Guests may enjoy times of solitude in the garden to enjoy the calming touch of nature, or they may share a walk with
friends or family. The restorative elements of nature are important in the healing process.

http://www.hopelodgeutah.org

Kitchen and Dining, The kitchen is the heart of the home and it is designed to be a place where individual meals are prepared, allowing
caregivers and patients to reflect on the day and offer support to one another

http://www.hopelodgeutah.org]

Suite, Each bedroom suite includes two beds with a small separate area for the caregiver to read, work or watch TV while the patient
is resting

http://www.hopelodgeutah.org

Common Areas, The south-facing patio on the roof balcony offers patients and caregivers the chance to be outside to soak in the
sunshine, read, or reflect while taking pleasure in a beautiful view of Mt. Olympus.

Salt Lake City Entrance, Salt Lake City sits at the crossroads of the Intermountain West. The Hope Lodge will be conveniently located for
patients who come from all parts of Utah and from surrounding states for treatment at any one of its premiere cancer treatment centers.

Salt Lake City, East Central - Sugar House Updates

Wilmington Gardens - Sugar House still rising

Isaac Riddle | July 14, 2014 | Developments, Proposed, Salt Lake City, Sugar House, Under Construction...READ MORE:http://www.theslcblog.org/more-growt...to-sugarhouse/

The Sugar House renaissance continues. Two projects by the Woodbury Corporation are poised to completely transform Wilmington Ave. in Sugar House. The projects at 1201 Wilmington Ave and 1202 Wilmington Ave are both mixed-use and will make Wilmington Ave one of the most pedestrian friendly corridors in Sugar House.

The 1201 Wilmington, also called Wilmington Gardens, project will fully utilize its location next to Hidden Hallow Park. Residents and visitors will be able to access Hidden Hallow from Wilmington Ave. thanks to a public plaza that will be built in the center of the project. Now that the Sugar House Draw has opened and connects Hidden Hallow to Sugar House Park, the Wilmington Gardens plaza will provide another entry point to Sugar House Park.

http://www.vcbo.com

The large mixed-use project is replacing what was a long-vacant lot. Apart from the tw0-story town-homes facing Hidden Hallow park, the project consists of two buildings, one at seven-stories and the other at just two-stories. The buildings will include a combined 212 residential units and will have ground-floor commercial space. The larger building that fronts Wilmington Ave. will also provide office/commercial space at the mezzanine level. The project includes a 171-stall underground parking garage...

1202 Wilmington Avenue

Isaac Riddle | July 14, 2014 | Developments, Salt Lake City, Smart Growth, Sugar House - http://www.theslcblog.org/more-growt...to-sugarhouse/

Rendering of the proposed mixed-use project at 1202 Wilmington. Photo by Isaac Riddle

As the Wilmington Gardens project nears completion, the Woodbury Coroporation is preparing for its second project at 1202 Wilmington Ave-directly across the street. Woodbury Corp. proposes a 10-story mixed-use building for what is currently a parking lot behind a very suburban-style shopping area. Current plans call for a ground-floor retail along Wilmington Ave. with structured parking in the back, floors two through four will be just for parking and floors 5-10 will make up the “residential” component.

The fifth through eighth floors of residential are planned as senior and assisted living, with the ninth and tenth floors designated as independent living for seniors.

1202 Wilmington’s height and that it will replace a surface parking lot make it a welcome addition to a growing urban corridor.

Once completed, the Wilmington Gardens and the 1202 Wilmington project will make Wilmington Ave a vibrant, pedestrian friendly avenue that will further integrate urban and walkable characteristics into Sugar House. Both projects are just over a block away from the S line streetcar and will be even closer once the line is extended to 2100 South. The mixture of senior, student and multifamily housing will also help make heart of Sugar House increasingly diverse.

New law school shows the U is headed in the right direction

Rendering of the new S.J. Quinney College of Law building.

Isaac Riddle | July 29, 2014 | Salt Lake City, University of Utah @ http://www.theslcblog.org/new-law-sc...ght-direction/

Construction of the University of Utah’s new S.J. Quinney College of Law has progressed significantly since construction started last year. The building has topped out and appears to better engage with the street and add more density to the area, then was originally conveyed in the renderings.

The new headquarters for the state of Utah’s only public law school, is directly across the street from the Stadium TRAX station at South Campus Drive and University Street.

The new law building replaces the older building next door. At 50 years-old, the current facility was no longer meeting the laws schools needs.

According to the University of Utah the new building will include:
◾Increased student space for learning and collaboration
◾Advanced research areas
◾Expanded library
◾Sustainable design
◾Universal design and accommodation
◾Office/conference rooms

The five-story, 155,000 square foot structure has almost no setback from the sidewalk, creating a very dense urban feel to a heavily used transit corridor. The open design of the first floor helps with street engagement. The University of Utah intends for the new building to be apart of the neighborhood and will include both a ground-floor cafe and coffee shop that will be open to the greater community. The project also includes a 450-seat conference center that will be used for university and community events.

Large windows on each floor will allow light from all directions to enter the building, helping to lower energy use. The windows are solar-screening low-emissivity and insulated glass which will help regulate the indoor temperature.

The University of Utah has identified the area surrounding the Stadium TRAX station as an important transit node for the school. Under the current master plan, the university plans to make the main campus more urban by making the university more compact with larger buildings taking up less space, improving bicycle and pedestrian access and by building developments around each TRAX station that encourage ridership and make each station a better gateway to campus.

The Stadium TRAX station serves as the main gateway into the university, but currently riders must cross through a large parking lot to get to the main campus. The station is heavily used by students and university staff and patrons of events at the adjacent Rice-Eccles Stadium. The school has considered building housing and retail adjacent to the station to make that corner of campus more pedestrian friendly and to break up the large parking lot that separates the station from the school.

The new law school building should help make the stadium area more walkable and when finished could provide the momentum needed to further develop the area surrounding the Stadium TRAX station.

Construction is expected to completed late summer of 2015.

New Lassonde Entrepreneurial Center To Resemble Google Headquarters

BLOOMBERG BUSINESS WEEK :

In a move it hopes will lure budding entrepreneurs who dream of souped-up Silicon Valley workspaces, the University of Utah plans to build a residence hall that blurs life and work the same way technology giants Facebook (FB) and Google (GOOG) do at their headquarters.

The new building, called Lassonde Studios, is part of the Lassonde Entrepreneur Institute, a division of the Eccles School of Business. It’s modeled after startup spaces in San Francisco and New York that are designed to promote a culture of innovation, says Troy D’Ambrosio, executive director of the institute.

To that end, a 20,000-square-foot workspace called the “garage” on the ground floor offers 3D printers and rooms to build prototypes. The garage is open 24 hours a day to accommodate bursts of off-hours inspiration...
