It was a beautiful day so we decided to take a drive into the Elbow River Valley which is just west of Calgary. It is a beautiful drive and the paved road ends at the foot of the mountains in Kananaskis country.
We stopped in an area called Cobble Flats.
The following pictures show the various areas of the Flats including a lovely little creek that was great to have lunch beside.
Near the creek and the wooden area it opens up intothe flats where the Elbow River flows.
The river is just beyond this tree.
The following were from an earlier trip to the Elbow Valley. Cobble Flats in at the bottom of the road
This is my favourite stomping grounds. Back in the day, I would make sure that all of my long weekends where spent enjoying the very places you’ve, pictured here. Elbow falls is just a short jaunt up the road as well.
My akita dog loved the mountains. In the wild akita’s are naturally a mountain hunting wolf, so he felt right at home chasing deer and such. We would join his chase on our dirt bikes but the dog and deer would leave us in the dust. When we would catch up my akita would have the deer lying in the moss unharmed although very tired and scared to say the least. “Let’s go boy”, is all I would say and he would be off looking for new pray. You cannot imagine how satisfying my dog seemed to be after each successful chase. Conan, or Corn Dog as we would fondly call him is gone now, but you have brought his memories back to me with this thread, thank you for that.
nice photos of one of my favourite drives/destinations. I like picnics at Forget Me Not Pond at the end of hiway 66, driving the one lane Powderface Trail past the pavement, and hiking Nihahi Ridge. I have biked the Big Elbow Little Elbow loop and lots of other trails out there. we're so lucky to have such recreational opportunities within 40 minutes of the city.
