Sacramento city council is set to approve the budget of $30,191,847 and schedule of 751 calendar days tonight. I have been onsite taking extensive photo documentation (several thousand images) and cataloging them prior to construction start. We mobilize trailers next week!

Sorry I haven't had a chance to post many updates. The City has been doing a great job keeping their project page updated with photos and information. You can see updates here:
http://sacramentovalleystation.com/c...ction-updates/

We are currently knee-deep in demolition and abatement work!

Progress is moving fast and furious, while abatement and demolition is ongoing. The first phases of the sitework are ongoing, check out the old rail road tracks which were uncovered and are being salvaged by the city for a future museum.

Given the nature this is an operational office building and train station, the sequence of work is critical. You notice the exterior wrapping on the scaffolding which will allow us to continue the exterior terracotta and brick restoration year round. With the old walls cleared away, we are uncovering beautiful brick work and some existing gremlins. Unfortunately, the exterior brick can't remain exposed as the exterior walls must be insulated to maintain LEED Gold certification.

A great article came out in the SacBee Monday about this milestone project

They are adding insulation to the inside of the exterior walls in order to get LEED Gold certification, not adding insulation to the outside of the exterior brick.

OOPS! Typo. Thanks, yes interior walls. Exterior walls are being cleaned, terra cotta restored, and damaged bricks replaced.

We kicked off the historic mural restoration this week, and the Sacbee was on site to do a quick article about the preservation.

http://www.sacbee.com/news/local/tra...e18451520.html

In other areas, we are repairing exterior terra cotta, repointing brick, restoring the windows, installing mechanical/electrical/plumbing systems in the basement, and laying out walls in the new Amtrak space.

We've been really busy with trying to the the new Amtrak space ready by the end of the year (West End), and the lobby ceilings completed so scaffold can be removed. I will post new pictures soon! The "cube" in the old restaurant is built and drywalled, and the waiting room ceiling/mural/walls are completed and signed off. In the meantime, I came across this short article from while the lobby restoration was underway. The finished product is truly stunning. The main waiting room scaffold is in the process of being removed after 3+ years!

I wish they would change the name of the station. What happened with that?

I never liked Sacramento Valley Station as a name either. Much prefer Union Station

It's only a "union station" if more than one railroad used the facility. Southern Pacific didn't want to share facilities with its competitor Western Pacific. Sacramento's only "union station" was the electric union station at 12th and Terminal. So renaming our passenger depot "Union Station" would be factually inaccurate. If we ever get high-speed rail to Sacramento and it isn't run by Amtrak, then we'd be a union station, I suppose.

That said, we're not the only station in the Sacramento Valley, so just renaming it "Sacramento Station" makes the most sense.

I think we can still come up with a better name than that.

Speaking of the name, the branding signage on the exterior is installed. Each anchor is carefully installed in the mortar instead of the brick to keep the integrity of the original brick.

This is the interior "cube" panorama. I'll try to get a better shot.

Lobby Ceiling complete

Mural restored

Original medallions were too far gone to save. They were re casted using original plaster & horsehair methods, then hand painted in place. Behind the medallions are hidden HVAC vents for the added A/C and Heat.

Restaurant ceiling is restored. This originally was partially collapsed, and was covered by a drop ceiling from the 50's!

West Mechanical Room nearly completed

Paradise! Graffiti from the decades remains in the basement.

2nd floor office cube. Note the restored ceiling.

West roof tear off complete. Trying to beat the rain!

Mockup of the metal panel and framing system to encase the added seismic supports for the parapet wall

Window restoration in progress. Painstaking process, so many windows

1 of 4 air handlers in the attic. This required cutting a hole in the roof and hoisting at night.

New baggage area

Great photos of the restoration underway! Considering they just installed the new sign, I figure it will remain "Sacramento Valley Station" for a while.

That sign was NOT cheap OR easy to install either!

Well, it looks great. And I'm pretty sure that if it was changed, we'd end up with some consultant-sourced loser like "The Kay" or a crowd-sourced try-to-please-everyone mess like "Golden Spike Farm-To-Fork World-Class Station." Sometimes, it's really just simpler to not rebrand.
