Drifting a piece of equipment or material (perhaps a full 20' length of pipe, for example) involves lifting said piece to the floor where its needed and sending it in through the side. You get it in as far as you can using the crane and then transition from the crane to lifting and pulling devices (chain blocks,come-alongs and/or heavy duty skates). It can be quite a slow process, depending on what has to be brought up and in because you can't just unhook it from the crane when its halfway through until you have a way to pull it in. I've actually been on jobs where we've brought entire package boilers in thru the side of a building. It's better to have all the stuff in before the next level of steel goes up and it sure is less time consuming that way,but more importantly,it's safer. One thing we try to do is make sure that everybody who comes to work leaves at 3:00 with all their fingers and toes in the same place they were when they came to work that morning so they can see their families. I've seen people hurt and even killed because they got a little too rammy. Hope that helps a bit.

Im sure this has been answered before but is there a reason that the mechanical floors take so long?

The mechanical floors are higher than the normal floors in a building. They contain all the machinary, utility, technical, backup, HVAC etc. that keep the building running. The old Twins had three of these floors, uniquely found in the three dark strips along their facade. That's why it takes longer, but worth the wait, because after the mech floors are done 1WTC will top out.

Remember though the Twin Towers also had most of their equipment on the buildings surrounding them. One World Trade Center would have everything located into it's mechanical floors.

Most of the mechanical was either in the GIANT basements/loading docks and/or the 3+3=6 in total mechanical floors. The rest miniscule equipment was if I recall on the surrounding buildings.
