The wife and I flew down to New Orleans with a couple of friends last month. We actually stayed in Gulfport, MS and drove in everyday. It was a really suburban plan. Anyhoo... the pics.
Our cabin in Gulfport. The pylons in the front are from a house that was lost during the hurricane.
There were tons of empty lots and foundations slabs left bare.
Waffle House, based just outside of Atlanta, was the first to rebuild after Katrina. We made a game of spotting Waffle Houses. They are EVERYWHERE.
Piney woods between NOLA and Gulfport.
This is just inside East New Orleans. There's a wildlife refuge and tons of houses on stilts.
Concrete geodesic dome on stilts.
Not all of the houses have been built back.
Sculpture on the levee at the French Quarter.
Jackson Brewery
Jackson Square. The south and north sides of the square are fronted by look alike buildings.
St Louis Cathedral
A Mediterranean palm in Jackson Square.
Andrew Jackson himself.
A Crepe Myrtle - yes, it has no bark.
The gates to Jackson Square on the north side.
Gettin' down at Jackson Square.
The first public school in Louisiana.
It's well over 200 years old.
The large, ornate balconies are referred to as galleries.
This is a carriage passage to a courtyard. Every block in the quarter has several courtyards. It adds a real mystique to the quarter.
A courtyard turned restaurant.
Joan of Arc at the French Market
Some places are in such good condition I couldn't tell how old they were, or if they were old at all.
Bourbon Street from above.
I think she hulas topless on warmer days.
Bob Esponja
I believe this is a modern Hilton trying to fit in.
This is merely a balcony, not a gallery.
I spot some foundation problems in this building.
The Iberville Housing Development. I believe they're in the process of tearing these down.
St Louis Cemetery #1
I asked the guy what he was playing. I can't remember what it was.
An alley by St Louis Cathedral
Yup, that's me.
The Lake Ponchetrain Bridge. It's 23 miles of this...
Going across the mighty Mississipp
The Garden District
The Eiffel Club. This is the original top of the Eiffel Tower (?)
Big roots
Anne Rice's backyard
Pink stucco is popular
Foxtail ferns
St Charles Street
Canal and Bourbon
A live oak in City Park that had a palm growing out of the trunk, Spanish moss and ferns growing on the boughs.
I did not know that ferns can grow on trees.
Creepy house near City Park
Anyone know what this is?
Good times had by all in NOLA!

I'm glad you had a good time here. Coming in on Chef Hwy is fun, although you get to see the suburban wasteland of New Orleans East.
The sloping house may not be a foundation problem... ancient buildings were intentionally built with a batter (slope) in the wall to shed rain faster. Of course, foundation problems are also common here, so... hard to tell.

i've been obsessed with the foliage of new orleans for some time and have attempted to replicate that here with some success...i have to build a small greenhouse every winter over the palms (the european palms in st. louis square inspired me to plant some here). this year i almost lost one - all that is left practically is the central spear.
those almost look like paw paws but they dont grow off the trunk.
