Hi guys,
I stumbled across this site looking for latest info on the THSR, and what a treat it has been to find it these fantastic photos, congrats to you blokes on a great forum.
The arial photo in question looks spookily like the Linkou tunnels section between Taipei and Taoyuan, as I recall, 7 tunnels of varying lengths the longest being about 700m.
From a construction point of view, no major difficulties on this section other than initial logistics as they were a bit remote for access purposes. The really problematic area was the 3km mined Hukou tunnel just north of Hsinchu, that was a different tale!
For anyone with access to Google earth, the Linkou to Hukou section photos are high definition and were taken during the THSR construction stages. Viaduct piers, sections of completed decks, tunnel portals, and laydown areas for tunnels and major road bridge crossings are all clearly visible, as is Taoyuan station and approaches where the THSR goes underground.
Unfortunately the photos over the Chungli section are not HD and the really interesting temporary works section for the PC yard and launcher systems are not visible.
Easiest way to locate the THSR is to zoom down on the CKS airport and then scroll SE, THSR passed close to CKS perimeter within a km or so.

I was with Obayashi/Futsu on C215, Hukou ~ Linkou civil construction.
Obayashi also did C210, North from Linkou (C215/210 interface) to SE of Taipei.
Although not directly involved with 210, being the same company we obviously had some contact with their works also.
I was there from late 01 to June 04, then unfortunately had to move on to other things before the completion of the project, which I was rather sad about, but these things happen.
Best damn job I ever worked on, and with a very good bunch of people from an impressive company, fabulous and very enjoyable 3 years.

Please do come back to Taiwan to take a ride on the HSR when it opens for operation. Thank you for your contribution to making this world's largest BOT project possible.

Sure does, nice B+W’s, especially the MSS equipment setup which I have uploaded for my records, many thanks.

I have many good photos, unfortunately most of them prints though, but I will reciprocate with a good picture of the carrier and girder launch system in operation, that I will put up when I get freed up to post attachments.

Yeah, a return to ride the rails when complete is on my 'to do' list.
It is one of the rewards of being involved on large projects, that there is something real to see and experience at the end of it all and say "I helped put this thing up"

Would also be nice to be able to visit and see more of Taiwan that time did not permit whilst I was there, which unfortunately is one of the minor inconveniences of working on major international projects, there never seems to be the time to play the tourist and see the places that one is posted to.
Especially true of Taiwan, where traveling time is somewhat prohibitive, which is after all why we were there after all.

[搶先試乘]台灣高鐵300km/h初體驗

世界上第一條商業運轉的高鐵系統是1964年的日本新幹線
之後各國也開始陸陸續續發展不同的高鐵系統
目前世界上有高鐵系統的國家
有日本、法國、德國、義大利、西班牙、端士、美國、及最近才通車的韓國
2006年,台灣成為下一個擁有高鐵系統的國家

高鐵在台灣的時間不長
從2000年開始動工到現在準備通車花了6年的時間

高鐵是採用國際標準軌距
先天上就比台鐵的窄軌要穩
加上鋼軌沒有接縫
車子在跑的時候不會有經過接縫時的震動
加上車子本身又有特別設計的避震系統
感覺不出來是坐在鋼軌的列車上
以開車的術語就是路感比較模糊
比台鐵要舒適不少

來看看照片吧

高鐵左營車站,鏡頭不夠廣拍不出全貌,頗有氣勢的



人工售票窗口,每個窗口還有一台LCD銀幕顯示購票資訊

也有自動售票機,不過系統還不穩定,一開始可能沒辦法用

大型電子看版顯示列車資訊

自動驗票匝門,有點類似國外的捷運系統

古色古香的立鐘

LED列車進站警示燈,嵌在地磚內很特別,亮度也很亮

今天的主角進站了

還在試運專,正試通車再等等

標準車廂內裝,椅子有點窄,不知道是不是日本人都比較瘦

商務車廂位子就真的很舒服了

有專用空間可以放大型行李

商務車廂位子都有個餐盤,上面印有全車服務資訊

好大一塊腳踏板,我的腳是八號半

一樣商務車廂才有,六有頻道的音樂可以選,不過大家應該都有MP3了吧

商務座位還有110V的插座,可以充充手機或是NB的電

閱讀燈,真的很像在飛機上

列車出發,經過總機廠

時速300公里真的很穩,水放在窗邊不會濺起來,只有一些些的水波

下車了,車頭造型很未來,不過還是比較喜歡700系的鴉嘴獸造型


整體來說車廂非常舒適
速度真的很快
左營上車沒幾分鐘就到台南、嘉義
一下子就到台中、新竹
沒多久就已經在桃園、板橋
這種感覺真的很奇特
和坐飛機或自已開車不同
快速、舒適是我試乘後的結論

i gonna try to translate it with my limited english...

"the first 300/h experience of taiwan shinkansen.

the world's first commercial running high speed train(hst) is japan shinkansen in 1964. after, other countries had also begun to developp their own hst systems. currently, the countries who have a hst system are japan, france, germany, italy, spain, swiss, usa, and more recently korea.
in 2006, taiwan is going to be the next country equiped with a hst system.

hst system's time in taiwan has not been long...
from the beginning of its construction in 2000 to its final connexion's preparation in 2006, 6 years have been spent.

hst's railways use the international standing width
so in essence, its stability is better than the taiwan traditionnal railway's,which is more cramped...
plus, there is no juncture between the rails
so there is no tremor during travelling
plus, the railcars theirselves are equiped with a special anti-shaking system
so you're not under the impression to be riding in a train
with a car driver's techinical words, i'd say the "driving feeling is more blurry"
anyhow, its is certainly more comfortable than taiwan railway' traditionnal trains.

Bullet train likely to be delayed

INSUFFICIENT TEST RUNS: Lloyd's Register, the certifying authority, asked the Taiwan High Speed Rail Co to conduct additional observations before opening

Vice Minister of Transportation and Communications Ho Nuan-hsuan ( 何煖軒) yesterday issued a statement confirming fears that the nation's first bullet train is unlikely to be operational by the end of this month.

"The specialists from Lloyd's Register [the certifying institute] said that the Taiwan High Speed Rail Co [THSRC] has not conducted a sufficient number of test runs during the past two weeks, and they have asked for additional observations," Ho said.

"THSRC said they could only tender the Independent Verification and Validation Facility [IV&V] report in early November," he said.

Inspectors decided over the weekend that the final review meeting would have to be postponed until after THSRC turns in the IV&V report, he said.

According to Ho, the company held a drill yesterday to test the system's readiness in case of an earthquake. The scenario was based on a magnitude five earthquake striking while the train was operating at 300kph.

Inspectors were divided into small groups and dispatched to observe responses at the company's headquarters in Taipei, the traffic control center, on board a train and at stations in Chiayi, Tainan and Tsoying.

Ho said that it took the train 3.5km to come to a complete stop.

The traffic center then activated standardized operating procedures for an emergency situation.

The power supply system was immediately switched off and train crews guided passengers to the exits. The company then dispatched small buses to escort passengers to a safe spot.

Before the train resumed operation, the driver checked to see if the train had derailed.

The train then resumed travelling and gradually increased its speed.

"The drill was held to see how able the company was in handling various emergency situations," Ho said."Its performance was found to be satisfactory."

He noted that each inspector only focused on a small part of the entire operation during the test.

Follow-up action was needed to organize their thoughts and observations into a complete report, he said.

On Saturday, THSRC operated a train according to a preset timetable. The company also simulated operations during rush hour, with inspectors entering the control center to check if the company could adeptly deploy additional trains.

It also created a scenario where the railway's tracks were damaged in order to examine how promptly the control center could order the closure of one line and initiate two-way operation using the other line.

Ho reiterated yesterday that the Ministry of Transportation and Communications has set no specific launch date for the train to begin service.

The THSRC would only be allowed to operate when the safety concerns were fully addressed, he said.

nonetheless, I think it's better off this way! At least the delay opening should make the ride safer..
