The same reason the Tribeca seemed to take forever - the building method. In both cases, they basically cut a deep trench around the property, drop in a re-bar cage and then fill the trench with concrete - using the trench sides as the form. This casts your building foundation. That is the stage that the Merit is at now. Once the foundation is in place, all the spoil within it will be excavated. The foundation will be supported with tie-backs as it is emptied. The Tribeca is a good example of what will happen at the Merit site.

The building next door has some cracks (don't know since when). They will have not to shake it too much.

Second Avenue West is still in 'Proposed Status' and probably has resident moved in by now.

Nice

Nice pic. Great winter scene for Otttawa. Good tourist promo.
What's going on at Confederatin Park?

Nope. 700 Sussex is too great an address in too prime a location for that. However, it will replace 90 George as the #2 (although it may have to fight Re, for that second place spot, assuming Ashcroft ever builds it).

NHL AllStar Game Carnival-ey stuff (looks like the Winterlude ice sculpture setup, but it's not)

At least there is a pit and tie-backs in that pic...that's a lot more progress than just what looked like a poured footing and a bit of earth scraped away from it...

that's an old pic, they are at least 2-3 floors deeper now and the crane should be going up very shortly!

Between this, 150 and 90 Elgin, there's a lot of activity around city Hall.

Personally, I prefer the location of 90 Georges over the merit.
Although, I'm not sure if the people who can afford living in those condos take public transportation, the transitway is slightly closer to 90 george and a LRT station will be litteraly right in front of it. Also, sto bus routes all start on rideau. Confederation park is as close to the merit as major hill park is to 90 goerges. Shopping wise, I think 90 georges gets the edge with Byward market great for going out and high end shopping which is complemented with casual every day need stores of rideau centre. Of course all of this is not that far from the merit but I wouldn't walk the distance for a last minute one item buy. Elgin is the only option for that.

It took me 5 minutes to walk from the Merit site to the Rideau center --- not far at all. 90 Georges is great location- right in the middle of the hussel and busel ... Go take a walk in Confederation park - stand in the middle of it and and look around -visualize 150 Elgin up-the Merit up - ect ect -- that area is going to be very attractive ---once everything is up!

it's going to be a more quite area than the market for sure --- but it's all walking distance

I forgot to add -- The Merit looks very awsome on paper -- Once it's up an lite up we'll see if it's the best looking building in Ottawa

I agree with what you're saying above...take a look at the number of construction cranes in the air around the downtown area...quite a lot actually, and to think that from certain vantage points, you will be able to see cranes up for the construction near Carling ave and Preston in the near future.
