It's an Ontario thing. We're too masculine for sugared pastries. You setup a stand that sales 'Standard Lager', 'Blue', or 'Fort Garry' on the Red and you see how well it does.

Ottawa claims canal rink still beats Forks
Sun Jan 13 2008

By Dave Rogers

OTTAWA -- Officials with the world-famous Rideau Canal Skateway have given a cold shoulder to Winnipeg's plans to steal the Guinness record for longest outdoor rink.

They say it doesn't matter that Winnipeg's 8.5-kilometre river trail will surpass Ottawa's 7.8-kilometre surface.

What matters to them is overall size, not length.

"Our world record is for the world's largest naturally frozen ice surface," National Capital Commission spokeswoman Kathryn Keyes said. "The Guinness people looked at three criteria: the length which is 7.8 kilometres, the width and the skating experience.

"They calculated the surface at 165,621 square metres of surface area which is the equivalent of 90 Olympic size hockey rinks. In Ottawa we are skating on a World Heritage Site as recognized by UNESCO. There is no experience like skating through the capital on a world icon."

Paul Jordan begs to differ. The manager of The Forks market in downtown Winnipeg said Ottawa used to brag that it had the longest skating rink in the world but Ottawa officials "like typical bureaucrats" now claim their rink is the world's biggest.

Jordan is so confident that he has already called the Guinness Book of Records to have Winnipeg's rink registered as the world's longest.

Jordan said eight university students with snow shovels have been working for three weeks clearing a six-kilometre trail along the Red and Assiniboine rivers through the city core.

By Jan. 25 Winnipeg officials expect to have the record-breaking 8.5-kilometres.

In 2007 Winnipeg's River Trail was only four kilometres, but. Jordan figured it wouldn't take much effort to make it longer than the Ottawa skateway.

Winnipeg's skateway will run from Omand's Creek on the Assiniboine north to Voyageur Park on the Red River.

"We have been building this River Trail for 20 years and typically it is four kilometres long," Mr. Jordan said. "But last year the entire Rideau Canal wasn't ready and by a fluke we had the longest trail in the world.

"We got into a friendly dissing match with Ottawa to the point where a Citizen columnist called me a 'dweeb in a snowsuit.' We were 'Whinerpeg' and how dare we pretend to be better than mighty Ottawa?"

Winnipeg uses an ice surfacing machine and snow plows to maintain an ice trail about four metres wide. Mr. Jordan said he has skated the Rideau Canal, but added Winnipeg is colder and has better ice.

Keyes, the Ottawa official, said the canal's full 7.8 kilometres won't open during the next 10 days but, the NCC is working on getting the full skateway ready by next Winterlude which runs from Feb. 1 to 17.

There are no plans to extend the Ottawa skateway this year to make it longer than Winnipeg's winter trail.

Naw, too redundant. We know the rivers freeze.

You should change the city's motto to: "Glacialis flumen admiratio."

Vid,

I'm guessing you're using a CRT based monitor, not an LCD based monitor...?

Because I too can't tell the difference.
