Philadelphia to Get Probably the Coolest-Looking Hotel Building Ever
Where: 12th and Chestnut [map], Philadelphia, PA, United States

Ok, so it's no Death Star Hotel but this is kinda amazing. The Illadelph blog has the breaking news on a crazy new hotel to be built in Center City.

Called The Unknot Tower, the Winka Dubbeldam-designed building is a architectural wonder. We can't describe it so we just have to rely on these renderings from the Illadelph.

But don't judge a book by its cover or a building by its design. There's good stuff inside too. The 27-story building will be located on 12th and Chestnut street which desperately needs a cool hotel and will have retail space, residences and according to Foobooz, a L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon restaurant.

As for the hotel bit, it will have 145 rooms and will be managed by GHM Hotels which currently has 14 luxury properties around the world but only one in the U.S. and that's the Setai. So this will be a swank hotel indeed. And we wouldn't expect anything less. You think they'd put a Best Western in this architectural greatness?

bleh it this gets built it will be regret full in 10-15 years. I don't see this design as having long-term-lovability.

I don't know, I think it will work pretty well at street level. The more dramatic effect will be on Sansom where it will be a 27 story look straight up. While the renderings make it appear as if it's very different in design, on the skyline from the south it will appear as a simple, rectangle. East and West views will capture the cut-out atrium which will provide even more visual interest and in someways temper the shocking appearance of slanted north side.

Regardless, it will bring additional life to that part of chestnut and expand the renaissance that has been migrating east along that street for the past 10 years.

Imagine sledding off that thing in the winter. That would be so cool!

Philadelphia has got modernism construction locked down in the last couple of years. I say, Huzzah! Love it.

It means they have built some modern buildings.
Such as: Cira Center, Comcast, Murano
Proposals: ACC, Cira 2, and now this.

They are on top of modernism.

Is the slanted portion windows? If so it would make for some neat, albeit waisted space on the inside.

Yes, and it will be a real shot in the arm to a stretch of Chestnut Street that really needs it.

Isn't this replacing two old six story buildings, Swinefeld? That's what I saw at phillyblog but that was a while ago. Your yellow outline appears to be to the right of the two buildings in question if I remember correctly.

i dont think it has a desgin that should be standing out so much. it it was surrounded by 20 story buildings instead of the current, i think it would fit in and look much nicer.
