NEW YORK | One New York Plaza | 640 FT / 195 M | 50 FLOORS | 1969

How about some love for One New York Plaza?
She's the southernmost of Manhattan skyscrapers, and she's had one heck of an eventful history. Fires and explosions have left their marks, yet she's still standing, defiant as ever.

In the mid 90's, she got a facelift- her corners and roofline used to be painted black, but they were repainted in white, which makes them look so much better, IMHO. I like her facade too, it's got an interesting texture.
I don't have any fan art for this skyscraper, but I'm working on it!

Here's a little something cool- the official Tenant Handbook of One New York Plaza:

I'll start off with a few pictures I've taken of this lovely skyscraper:

Here's one thing I forgot- In most disaster movies, it's the iconic skyscrapers who bite it. But here in Deep Impact, we can clearly see One New York Plaza becoming one of the first casualties:

While I don't really like this building aesthetically, it along with the other big boxes which can be seen in your last photo in its immediate vicinity, like 55 Water, create a really impressive canyon on Water St.

Also, didn't think this was that tall. I guess all the buildings in that area are around 650-750 so you don't realize it, but yeah.

I always thought it looked better in black. This one has never moved me - another one of the 'blah' 60s/70s boxes in that area.

I really like 2 NYP. How can you not love a modernist office building in Yankee pinstripes? It's really pretty sharp.

1 NYP I can take or leave, but I do like the aluminum waffle facade. Reminds me of Alcoa in Pittsburgh.

I think 2 NYP looks like one of those really eccentric and ugly Japanese skyscrapers from the 50s that Godzilla should be pushing over.

For any other city, these would be considered mundane or eyesores. But for NYC, it gets lost in its huge skyline and just a piece of the urban fabric.

One of my most despised buildings in New York. It's ugly and massive in such a way that it, along with three other buildings, effectively destroyed the greatest city skyline in human history.

I can't feel the love for this building. Never thought it stood out positively in any way.

But then, I am massively in love with the 1930s-40s downtown NYC skyline.

I like 2 NY Plaza's pinstripes too! And I think it's kinda funny how that short and adorable skyscraper ended up sandwiched in between One New York Plaza and 55 Water, almost like it's trying to keep them separated. Make of that what you will
And yes, I do think that trio of buildings works well together.
I like the older skyscrapers too, but I'm also a fan of their modern cousins.
And as for One NY Plaza's different paintjobs, I think the black made her corners and rooflines kinda disappear, as well as making her look darker all around. The white helps bring those details out and lightens up her whole facade, as well as matching her up with 2 NY Plaza.

One of the many giants of late 20th century Lower Manhattan. You don't have to love it, but you have to admit, it has defined the skyline seen from the harbor since it and the other boxes rose to surround the 1920-1930s jewels.

What kills this one is the horrible corners on the top floor. Those need to be removed and this one needs a complete re-clad to all glass with some creative patterning. If this and the other massive blocks on Manhattan's southern tip got redone in this way it would do a lot to improve the skyline (maybe making it look less 1970s and more like the riverfront of modern Shanghai).

Looking like Shanghai is probably the last NY should aim for.

^^^ Yeah, despite the fact that these buildings aren't that great architecturally, they represent an era and really define the city's history at the time they were built.

I knew a comment like this was coming as soon as I posted mine.

And I of course disagree when it comes to these buildings. I didn't say the whole city should aim for that, but having some nice modern glass curtain walls along the river on such massive (and poorly massed, and ugly) buildings would do a lot to modernize southern Manhattan.

This is one of the nicer looking 70s office buildings. 55 Water should go instead.
