Your city's major nodes, on Google Street View

What are the important secondary suburban nodes in your city or urban area, and what do they look like?

'Important' basically means large pre-war hubs, or more recently developed large centers/centres with urban characteristics.

Provide a link to the the center of each node on google street view. One pic per location.

I'll start with my take on New York and gradually add locations.

Patterson, NJ

Passaic, NJ

Jersey City, NJ

New Rochelle, NY

White Plains, NY

Hoboken, NJ

Newark, NJ

Elizabeth, NJ

Stamford, CT

Greenwich, CT

New Brunswick, NJ

Perth Amboy, NJ

Yonkers, NY

Orange, NJ

Plainfield, NJ

Hempstead, NY

Hackensack, NJ

Millburn, NJ

Union, NJ

Morristown, NJ

Summit, NJ

Garden City, NY

Red Bank, NJ

Bayonne, NJ

Maplewood, NJ

Irvington, NJ

Cranford, NJ

Ridgewood, NJ

Nyack, NY

Tarrytown, NY

Port Chester, NY

^ Cool!!

I know little about the city, but here is some Seattle:

Bellevue

Everett

Redmond

Kent

Renton

Kirkland

Bremerton

there doesn't seem to much in the way of urban nodes in the northern suburbs, besides Everett? Are there more urban nodes that I missed?

Portland's suburbs don't have very impressive "urban" downtowns, but they're getting better.

Vancouver, WA

Milwaukie

Oregon City

Lake Oswego

Beaverton

Hillsboro

Newburg

There are way more than that, especially if you tweak your definition of "urban", but its a good introduction to Toronto's large amount of urban nodes.

^ I'd add Aurora, Newmarket, and Whitby and then Oshawa and Hamilton if you include more distinct cities that are part of the urban area.

Ue,

great links...one question though, are you sure about some of those locations? Refinery row doesn't exactly seem too urban to me...maybe there is an urban area close by that would be a better link?

Sydney around its suburbs is pretty dependent on nodes like these, where there’s a train station or transport hub there’ll usually be a main street, a ‘town’ centre or city centre of some sort. Most of the major shopping malls around the metro are integrated into these hubs and have active street frontages. I’ll list some of the more notable ones by each part of the metro. Their distances from the CBD range from 5-7 kilometres away (or outside what I consider as the inner city) right to the fringes of the metro. Got quite a few here so bear with me…

Also I have video links for a few of them as well if it doesn’t matter.

East and south east

Bondi Junction (vid)
Waverley
Randwick
Kingsford
Coogee
Mascot
Maroubra

Northern beaches, north and north west

North Sydney
St Leonards - Crows Nest
Chatswood (vid1, vid2 - dated vids, things have changed since)
Lane Cove
Hornsby
Manly (vid)
Dee Why
Epping
Eastwood (vid1, vid2)
West Ryde
Rhodes
Castle Hill
Rouse Hill Town Centre

West

Summer Hill
Ashfield
Burwood (vid)
Strathfield
Lidcombe
Auburn
Parramatta (vid - dated vid)
Merrylands
Blacktown
Penrith

South & south west

Rockdale
Brighton Le Sands
Kogarah
Hurstville (vid)
Gymea
Cronulla
Marrickville
Campsie (vid)
Lakemba
Bankstown
Fairfield
Cabramatta (vid)
Liverpool
Campbelltown

With Sydney an easy way to spot more nodes like these on Earth or maps is to look around small arterial roads or follow the train lines where there is one, and around a decently sized train station they’ll usually be one of them.

Another neat 'trick' if you haven't noticed already is to to search for "restaurant" on Google maps and all the red dots that pop up will show you where all the retail is.

Phoenix generally developed post WWII and doesn't have to many established nodes (yet), and a number of our "nodes" are up and coming and consist of more typical post war urban characteristics and contemporary architecture, and many are very rapidly developing/redeveloping. With the recent development of a wildly successful light rail system (and many miles of additional line coming down the pipeline), many centralized areas will become nodes in time and are just now starting to enter the very earliest stages of urban development.

Tempe

Biltmore

Kierland

Desert Ridge

Glendale

Mesa

Old Town

Scottsdale

Tempe Town Lake

Riverview

Gateway

I’ll try doing a few for Auckland, New Zealand though I'm not as familiar with the city. It’s a sprawling city of 1.5 million and has an urban structure similar to Sydney and Melbourne.

Newmarket

Remuera

Ellerslie

Onehunga

Takapuna

Browns Bay

Davenport

Henderson

Otahuhu

Papatoetoe

Manukau

Papakura

Howick

But yeah, there are a ton more too though including Newark, Upper Darby, Phoenixville, Ardmore, Bala Cynwyd, Bryn Mawr, Jenkintown, Ambler, Downingtown, Newtown Square, Doylestown, Lansdale, Bristol, New Hope, Newtown, Yardley, Pottstown, Burlington, Glassboro, etc.

Once you get to the CSA level, there is even more including Dover, Atlantic City, Reading, Vineland, Bridgeton, Cape May, Wildwood, Stone Harbor, Avalon, Sea Isle City, Ocean City, Brigantine, etc.

^ good choices, Ambler looks nice.

New Hope and Lambertville are a bit too far. Maybe part of Trenton's UA (although 9 miles up the river, it's debateable)

Philly has beautiful suburbs and beautiful exurbs.

For DC, I propose (very easy)

Takoma Park

Silver Spring

Wheaton?

Bethesda

Tysons

Herndon

Reston

Columbia, MD

Gaithersburg

Germantown

Falls Church

Rockville

College Park

Hyattsville

Fairfax/McClane?

I would lump most of Arlington in with the 'central city' and thus not qualifying as a major suburban node.

too boring to do now, I will find the links later.

Oh, I was doing nodes in general, be they dense or sprawling, commercial or industrial. Refinery Row is a huge industrial node and centre for employment, but most of the roads don't even have sidewalks and it reeks of petroleum (unsurprisingly). The more 'built' up nodes close to it would be Sherwood Park Centre or Capilano.
