You said those pics were taken today, were they all close to the cbd or taken throughout different neighborhoods? That 3rd pic has such a unique look, I think that is what makes Melbourne special, its huge mix of architecture. Does the Melbourne metro area have a lot of technology jobs? I was wondering about its economy and what the larger sectors are.

They were all close to the CBD so they were all within reasonable walkable distance from each other. Melbourne has a highly diversified economy with particular strengths in finance, manufacturing, research, IT, education, logistics and transportation, conventions and tourism. It is also home to Australia's largest and busiest seaport which handles more than $75 billion in trade every year

How extensive is Melbourne's pre-war/colonial architecture? How far does it extend from the city's Downtown? Anyways, great thread. I particularly enjoy those long, rambling avenues lined with various one/two-story colonial buildings.

Those building are located all over the downtown area and in the inner suburbs around it, there are also a couple of outer suburbs near the beach who have this old architecture too (mostly private homes)

You can find a fairly good list here http://www.walkingmelbourne.com/melb...buildings.html

Good to see KOTH is discovering Melbourne. I think many forumers from the US would look at Melbourne and ask themselves "Here is a metro area of 4 million in a new world country even younger then the US yet none of our metros of that size pack even close to the urban punch pound for pound that this city does".

Seriously look at Seattle, Minneapolis, Houston, Atlanta, San Diego, Miami, Detroit, even Dallas etc. All metro areas within 500k to 1.5 million of Melbourne and none of them even come close to offering what this city does. I would love to hear someones comparison of Melbourne and a much larger US metro like Los Angeles for example.

Anyone out there spent considerable time in both LA and Mel who could comment?

Those apartments overlooking the park in the second to last picture look great. Such quality with some old and modern mixed in. That must be a very desirable neighborhood.

That's East Melbourne which is just next to downtown
Average house price for this area is $1,352,000
Average condo/apartment price for this area is $560,000
