Talk about shit show of NIMBYISM. It's too tall and out of context apparently.

And they got mad I called them NIMBYS, as if I could give two fucks about that.

Curbed and DNAInfo were there, so I'm sure you'll see the renderings later. The current design isn't too bad.

-236 units
-84 parking spaces
-20 story mixed-use
-5,000 sq ft of retail
-SCB Architects
-outside the historic fulton market area
-alley widened by 6’ for maneuvering
-tower would step in 5' from the podium
-2 floors of parking
-parking screened by active space
-217’ 4” (which didn't include the mechanical penthouse)
-13 units per floor

I didn't feel like editing so.....

What about the children???

Looks good to me. The zig-zag windows are a bit wonky looking, but still not bad

Nimby's strike again.

Developer pitches plan for 20 story west loop apartment tower - DNAinfo

Quote:
After some neighbors complained the building was too tall at the meeting, Ald. Walter Burnett Jr. (27th) told DNAinfo that he won't approve the project at 20 stories right now.

"They may have to come down on height," Burnett said of the developer's plan. "They've got work to do... from this meeting, they definitely need to work with the community on height."

Well said. Anyhow, in sure this design, or perhaps one a few floors shorter, will get built. The Alderman probably already got his check so this is just a mere formality at this point

I like the fact that the West Loop has more unified height to it. Not every downtown neighborhood needs to have high-rises, especially one that doesn't front the lake.

So many cities would kill to have the development boom we have going on right now. Why must Chicago officials always bow down to NIMBYs' concerns about height and parking, when they are in downtown?

I agree. Could definitely be refined.....but it's decent.

I'm guessing the play from go here is to get 12-14 stories approved......

I do not really disagree. I'm fine if the true high-rises west of the expressway are mostly limited to those bordering (both) expressways.....with mostly mid-rises and low-rises elsewhere....

Height junkies might actually want to embrace this as well, as it will actually on net add pressure to land prices in other parts of downtown which will on net increase likelihood of increasingly tall buildings.....potentially including more supertalls. I'm not a height junkie per se myself, but just something to think about for those of you that are....

WTF...? River North doesn't front the lake. It's either downtown or it's not. There are 210 other square miles of this city for low/midrise structures.

You can have a ton of density without going too vertical. Problem is, that's not the case with new construction in Chicago

That's really not the case anywhere in the U.S.

Sure it is... Parts of NYC. My girlfriend's neighborhood in queens has almost no buildings above 5 stories and it's 55k to 80k ppsm throughout. My area of Manhattan is also mostly low rise, though there's some high rises but they're almost all under 20 stories. It's something like 120k ppsm.

The thing is that my girlfriend's area, while relatively cheap, may still have a number of units where is 3 or 4 people to a 2 bedroom. Some of the units are sizable (like her 2 bedroom legit has a 30 foot long living room/kitchen).

I feel as if
1) The COL is good enough where on average ppl aren't cramming 3 to a 1 bedroom like you see in NYC
2) People in Chicago might like their personal space a little more after they realize they can get it
