Am curious to know why they have left this gap in the glazing for four floors and whether they will fill it in before or after they continue up with the spire?

Any engineers in the house?

I think most skycrapers have a designed lifespan of 120-200 years. Someone feel free to correct me though. This has always made me worry that I would see buildings like the ESB and Chrysler torn down in my lifetime due to age.

I could have sworn I posted this last week, but maybe I hit preview and not Submit... or maybe it was one of the many, many times that IE crashes on me at work.

Either way, here is an evocative shot from last Friday when the Fog hung over London.

That's a cool shot!

Does anyone know what is going to be on the top few floors of this? Will they be inhabited? It seems like they would be awfully small to be of any use. In the Transamerica Pyramid in San Francisco the point is basically the roof.

I second that emotion. I work less than 100 yards from The Shard; it's literally in my eyeline every time I look up from my monitor. As I crane my neck to look up I see the same 4 storey unglazed gap and missing spire. It's pretty infuriating.

I like the way the cladding looks in the sun, but not when it is overcast. It looks dreary. This might be a problem for a building in London.

I'm not really following this tower, but can someone tell me what the very tip top floor will be used for? Office? Observation? Condos?

Either way whatever it is, I bet the views are incredible!

In this snap, you've taken advantage of one of the things that London has long been famous for in conjunction with the Shard.

Great shot, misty. Evocative and mysterious.

Next year, I expect to visit the UK and the Shard will be one of many subjects in my photography 'round London.

This is such a beautiful tower. Elegant. Great sheathing.

The top will house an observatory gallery, if it hasn't already been answered.
