I would definitely agree that it is one of the coolest. I haven't been back since living there as a kid but I remember loving it.

Bloomberg rates it 26th most expensive.
http://images.businessweek.com/ss/10..._cities/27.htm

Compared to other Euro cities its probably cheap.

Anyway, that article feels about 10 years late. The fact they're trumpeting all the celebrities who use it as their playground confirms my suspicions that the bohemian "anything goes" days have passed.

The East Coast media discovered Berlin already 10 years ago, correct.
Hollywood did took longer, thats why the article feels not really new.

Anyway, Berlins wealthy districts are still not very dominant in the city as a whole. There is plenty of freedom, liberty, empty spaces and cheap rents guaranteed for the next decade.....

Berlin has also become a major backdrop for many fresh action movies...

Basically the city went bankrupt, but it turned out to be the best thing that happened to it - culture went into overdrive, and no longer came under threat from developers and multinationals as in every other city in the world. Berlin went leftfield sprouting myriad underground scenes (urban golf anyone?), and attracting artists from all over Europe and the world (usurping London's scene which had become moneyed, corporatised and expensive) with cheap rents and cheap nightlife. Anything goes, and anything's possible in Berlin.

In short a recipe for accessibility (people can actually afford to party, and have choices - in where, what, and with whom), and thus plurality.

In short it's trendy but still true to its roots, it draws newcomers and creatives by the thousand yet is still affordable - and all while still bucking the Starbucks makeovers - just about the rarest thing on the planet now.

Berlin is #1 on my list to visit. I'm a techno head, so Berlin is my pilgrimage. It's the epicenter

The city's unemployment rate is something like 15%, no? I've had friends (not from Germany or the EU) try to seek work there only to come back empty-handed a few months later.

Chinese Artists Drawn to Berlin, a Haven That Reveres History
- NYT By DIDI KIRSTEN TATLOW Published: August 10, 2011

Quote:
More than two decades after German reunification, this city that experienced the political repression and terror of both fascist and Communist dictatorships is emerging as a haven for persecuted Chinese artists, fellow intellectuals said.

Acquaintances say that Mr. Ai’s motives for choosing Berlin include his large following in Europe, his many friends in the city, its artistic freedom and cultural life, and the practical fact that property is cheap compared with cities like New York.

It's kind of like that everywhere. My employer can't find software engineers and when they do someone else always ends up offering them more money.

However, an American looking for a good (European) place to start a business are likely to find Amsterdam the easiest to deal with. The Dutch-American Friendship Treaty makes it trivial to get a residence permit allowing us to work. All you need is a business plan, health insurance and €4,500 in your bank account.

I still like Berlin better though!

I started my Master's degree in Architecture a few years ago in Berlin. Now that I'm finished, I'm hoping to return for work. Lear, can I live with you?
