Gargantuan NOAH 'Ark' Proposed to New Orleans with Straight Face

How do you know when your building plan has gotten unnecessarily crazy and pretentious? When it's named after a Biblical figure who was fabled to save life as we know it...that might be a clue.

NOAH (New Orleans Arcology Habitat) is a massive, 1200-foot city within a building that's hurricane-proof and can actually float (don't worry, it's tethered to something or other). Conceptualized through a mind trust of three architectural firms, green (wind, solar and water) energies would help power the structure's 20,000 residences, 1,000,000 square feet of commercial space, school, hospital and, just for fun, 3 casinos.

On one hand, this floating triangle seems like nothing less than a feat of modern engineering, a clever idea that's both structurally sound and handy in an emergency. On the other, have we given up so much on New Orleans that architects should abandon existing infrastructure altogether? If culture and way of life are not things we're looking to preserve, then why not just tell residents to move and be done with it?

It's not really that bad. I mean, if it was built in Dubai or China it'd be an okay structure. Something for NO like this would be pretty tight. Just with a WAY better design. It's the concept that I like.

New Orleans is more known for it's old historic architecture and charm. This doesn't seem fitting to put something like this next to the French Quarter.

Wouldn't it make more sense to build ascetically pleasing high density hurricane resistant structures in the parts of the city that are above sea level rather than building a structure that makes it look like an alien spacecraft has just landed.

I like the idea... It's something different for a change....and it really doesn't matter that it won't fit in with the traditional architecture as it is on the river front and goes out on the water if im reading it correctly... I'd like to hear more info about it... Does it have an official website? When does it go for approval?

I don't like the concept or the design.As some other people said before, they should entirely get rid of the city wthin a city idea.Maybe if they tweak the design MAJORLY all residence from New Orleans could come to it as a hurricane is projected to them.

Didn't that city in a block thing fail in the 60's and 70's after they built the 50's public housing projects?

New Orleans does need a tall building but fortunately this is not the one. This would mess up the awesome silhouette that includes a curve formed by the superdome and some highrises. I think Trumps NOLA building should really be built in the future.

^ as for the city within a city concepts I think the only cwac concept that was somewhat successful was the WTC.
