Whistler is far more than just a ski hill, it's a year round resort town in one of the most beautiful areas of the country. Real estate prices in Whistler are pretty much right in line with luxury properties all around the Lower Mainland / Gulf Islands area. Anyway, pretty much any ski hill or resort you go to will have super luxury accommodations, Whistler's values are just more inflated due to location.

I lived in Medicine Hat for a few years and was surprised they had a ski hill nearby. Hidden Valley is in the Cypress Hills about 45 minutes drive, it's small, but considering it's location, a 200m vertical isn't that bad. http://www.skihiddenvalley.net/

Small hills sometimes can be the most fun. It's "easy" to ski at a big resort, but you gotta wanna do it at a small hillock! I actually skied at Wentworth twice in 99/2000 when I was working in Hali. Unfortunately there was heavy snow, but the apres ski was memorable ... or so I think. Good times! As I said earlier in this thread, arguably Canada's greatest skier - Pod - learned to ski on a garbage dump in Toronto (Etobicoke).

Never skied there, but having spent numerous weekends at Apistitoke (scout camp at the base of the hill) I have climbed it many times and can appreciate the vertical. Heard that it had decent snow and an early season - sometimes opening in November. About 10 years ago I skied the little hill in Drumheller - about the same height at COP and 1/4 the width - but still a fun few hours.

Just went to Whistler over BC family day. It's so nice to be able to ski for a long time without having to take a lift back up every 2 minutes (I'm from Ontario)

I hope you got a chance to ski Peak to Creek, a run that requires three lifts to get back to the top!

So does all this warm weather out east mean an end to the ski season there?

Not really. There is still about 40 cm on the ground in the fields in the Ottawa-Gatineau area, so the Gatineau Hills, the Laurentians and the border mountains in the U.S. likely have even more.

The season won't be over for a good while.

OK so according to Environment Canada snow cover in Ottawa is now down to 20 cm. Still lots of snow on the ski hills though.

My father-in-law and I are planning a skiing / snowboarding trip Mar 1-5. Flying out of Denver. We were planning to go to a resort around Vernon (he loves it the town of Vernon), which looks like it would be SilverStar from a quick look online. But now he's worried about how much snow there's going to be. Any suggestions on the best places to go in interior BC? Coming from the US, it isn't easy to get to Kelowna unfortunately, so he's been thinking that we fly to Spokane and drive up. My dream is to eventually get to Revelstoke and some of those other amazing resorts, but don't think he's keen on the extra travel time.

Suggestions of the best places to go in BC within a drive of Spokane that will have snow then would be greatly appreciated!

A friend of mine was just out in Rossland, BC skiing at Red Mountain and it looked like they had lots of snow there. It's apparently a 3 hr drive from Spokane.

Haven't been to the Interior this year, however in most years (and this seems like a better one), the snow is very good until the end of March - you should have no worries about finding snow!

You could always meet up in Cranbrook (3 1/2 hours from Spokane - about the same drive to Nelson) and ski Kimberly, Pano or Fernie - though Pano is a longer day (but easily doable). I have skied all those places in early/mid March and had great snow.

Good luck and have fun!

Rossland Red Mountain is less than 3 hours and Nelson Whitewater is 3 and a half from Spokane. Just stay here in Castlegar and go to both like we do. Both under 45 minutes from here.
Cranbrook is too far from Spokane.

It was pretty sparse in December and January, so with all the recent snow they are back to about where they should be.

For the Rockies and the eastern Interior (I believe). It's been pretty great at the coastal resorts from early Dec on wards. North coast mtns are drowning in snow and Whistler ain't bad either. Check out the video of the avalanche inbounds at Blackcomb!

Glad to see the forecast for the weekend as I'll be at Sunshine/Louise this Sat/Sun. Should be a good one.

Massive amounts of snow on the three city resorts in Vancouver. Currently, there is a 14-foot base (with a fresh layer of deep powder) and 30 feet overall for the season.

Damn! have to get out to those hills one day, never get to ride Whistler or the Vancouver hills, only ever make it as far as Revy. What's the snow like there? do they get the nice dry powder or is it more heavy and wet?

I've heard rumblings that Fortress Mountain could start opening terrain in 2018, not sure how much they could open as I think they took out all the lifts and would have to put in new ones, but I would love if it were true, Calgary needs more ski hills!

I love Revelstoke too, (I want to try it's coaster this Summer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1J876Wse1Js ) Kicking Horse is a fav for its ridges and bowls but Whistler still has a solid hold on me, I've been going almost every year for the past dozen years or so & love the variety and relatively consistent conditions. even bad snow years you can find great skiing on each of the mountains. This year Blackcomb glacier had decent powder (never dry powder though) and there was even an ice cave formed just before exiting to main trail back to lifts.

I first learned to ski/board at Mission Ridge in Qu'Appelle valley just north of Regina.

Its not the biggest or best ski hill in the province but have to start somewhere.
That's where Mark McMorris made his debut.

here's a couple videos: one from Burton boards and one of Mark's 2017 Xgames season so far..
