Pilings for old piers that are long gone. It was a heavily industrial waterfront, but now mostly office/residential.

To generalize:
Oldtimers/blue collar: staunchly Jersey Citians
Newcomers/white collar: Jersey City as 6th Borough - work/play in NYC
Personally I love living in JC and working in next-door Hoboken, but all of my friends and family in the area live in Manhattan, Brooklyn, or Queens, so I'm in NYC about 1-3 times a week. I consider myself both a New Jerseyan and a New Yorker.
Jersey City can feel like a separate city, or like a western borough of New York City. It depends where and how you live. I actually live closer to downtown Manhattan than any of my Brooklyn/Queens friends, but I'm in the opposite direction.
