City: Liverpool
County: Merseyside
Place: Lime St. Station
The impressive Lime St. Station is the oldest railway station in the world still in use. Although it was remodeled several times during several decades, its last general restoration was the most relevant, with the construction of new platforms and the opening of passenger services to scottish destinations.
Unlike other cities in Europe, the Waverley Station transcends its functional character, both for serving as a terminal hub and a commercial center, and practically becomes the heart of Edinburgh. It is interesting to take a look at its location, since it seems sunk in the land in comparison to the rest of the city. The geogrpahy of the place is also very helpful for the layout of the tracks who reach the station, since they don't "cut" the city (from the urban point of view), as it usually happens.
With more than 33 million passengers per year, the Glasgow Central Station is, as well as one of the most important transport hubs in Scotland, one of the commercial epicenters of the city. Built in its first version almost 150 years ago, its integral design is similar to that of the major railway stations of its time, with a big entrance for private cars, a shopping mall and even a hotel.
