BOSTON | The Clarendon | 336 FT / 102 M | 32 FLOORS

The Clarendon is a mixed-use project currently in the excavation phase located in the Back Bay, directly across the street (southeast) from the John Hancock tower, Boston's and New England's tallest building. It will contain 299 rental and ownership units, a restaurant and a new Back Bay post office.

The architects are Robert A.M. Stern and local firm Childs Bertman Tseckares, otherwise known as CBT. They are to Boston what SOM are to New York City -- a high-volume firm producing, hmm, shall we say "ok" stuff.

Photo updates, taken by me

12/27/2006, the building prepped for demo was a post office

2/13/2007

2/27/2007.. two of Boston's best-known landmarks -- John Hancock Tower on the left and H.H. Richardson's Trinity Church in the center -- are just across the street

4/25/2007

most recent update - 6/3/2007

I go by the site at least a couple times a week, but there's been very little visible progress to show, so that's why I don't have any more recent photos.

If I'm not mistaken, it's located one block from Hard Rock Cafe ?

Not even a block -- it's adjacent to it, right across the alley.

Yeah, I'll be changing that from now on. I don't know when or why the Bostoners stopped posting here, but that's how it was when I started following Boston developments, and up until now I've just done what they did (ignore SSP and only post at ArchBoston), not thinking much of it.

But today I got an impulse to get Boston active on SSP again. And since most of the construction pictures posted on AB are mine, I have the freedom and ease of just copying what's over there without having to ask anyone if it's ok that I use their pictures. (once in a while I'll use someone else's shot(s), but by and large I'm trying to use only my stuff).

Expect to see at least a couple more Boston building threads pop up in the next few days/weeks

Well, great, Boston is a great town that needs to be represented here. Hopefully I can make it out there this fall and see the dig and bridge myself.

I really like that design. The setbacks look good, and I like the large amount of glass without it being a pure glass facade, giving it a good texture.

That building looks like a big game of tetris....but still pretty cool. Boston is a city that needs some 400-600 Ft. towers.

If they made it a hundred ft taller it would look better. 200 ft, and it would make a statement on the skyline. Looks really good though.

Ok. At first I was going to focus solely on the skyscraper developments going on since this is (in name at least) a skyscraper forum, but next thread I make I'll focus on that -- the Big Dig, and the park that now sits on top of it, the Rose kennedy Greenway. Look for it in the "General Developments" sub-forum in a day or two.

BTW, the visible progress that has been made on the Greenway in the last few months has been tremendous.

Tetris, that was exactly what I was thinking. Still the design is great. I like it.

I like this one. Kind of Rotterdam-ish, maybe it's the brick color and mixing rectangular forms.

kznyc you are a lovely man. Nice work with all the Boston updates here. I'm one of the few Boston fourmers who spend more time here then on Archboston but I dont have the detailed knowledge that most of AB forumers do for these projects.
