Seattle CSA = 4,038,741

Hey Folks-

According to the Census folks our current CSA population is over 4 million for the first time - 4,038,741 to be exact. This includes the following counties: King, Pierce, Snohomish, Thurston, Mason, Kitsap, Island, and now Skagit (new this year)!

3,309,347 - That's the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue MSA, which includes King, Pierce, and Snohomish Counties.

Here's a link to the info that was just released:

http://www.census.gov/population/www...07-annual.html

On the list of files you can download the first is for MSAs and the second is for CSAs.

It doesn't look like the 2007 estimates for cities have been posted yet. You should be able to find the 2006 ones pretty easily. The 2007 county estimates are here: http://www.census.gov/popest/countie...ST2007-01.html

The addition of Skagit County to the CSA (referred to as Metro Mount Vernon-Anacortes I believe) is in an obscure OMB memo that comes out periodically and updates such things. I linked to it on the thread in City Discussions.

why add?

Given the geography of the area, isn't Pierce/King/Snohomish accurate enough?

I mean, not to sound like an ass or anything, but you can just keep adding counties and end up with all 6 million.

You know, considering we have 2 cities in the area 200K+ as well as 2 over 100K and even 2 over 80k not to mention the myriad of smaller ones, I think we need a more broad terminology.
I was thinking that we take all cities within 25 miles of the Sound and use the term "Pugetopolis" for the much greater region. Besides, "Pugetopolis" is an awesome sounding name!

....

it has to do with how many people commute to where and other things. Don't know the official rules though

Fun Fact - With Skagit added to the Seattle CSA there are only 30 miles separating the Seattle CSA from the GVRD.

I am the 4,038,741 person. I made Seattle.

Does this count illegal immigrants or what? Is it counted by social security #'s or surveys or how?

Mason and Skagit? Sheesh... And I thought including Thurston and Island was pushing it!
