Thanks for making this compilation, I keep seeing new buildings pop up and having no idea where they came from. For example, I had no idea they were building the Flat Iron until I came home one weekend and it was just there.

Any word on when the next phase of the North End might start? I love the first building they constructed.

There was a rumor in a development blog but nothing reported. ONE (the North End building just completed), is fully rented out, which is a good sign.

There hasn't been any news or updates since it was announced a year ago. It's a pretty cool project though, I'll add it to the list.

I've always wondered why that part of town looked so vacant.

Does anyone have a pic of how this area looked when the freeway spur was in existence?

^ Everything to the East of the North-South Freeway in the above photo has been demolished and the street grid restored. They have been gradually chipping away at filling that rip in the urban fabric.

This interactive map will give you a good idea of what it now looks like and what is proposed to be built:

North End Expansion Coming Soon
JSonline.com

Mandel Group Inc. is planning to expand its downtown North End apartments, and work could begin on that project later this year, company President Barry Mandel said.

Mandel said the firm is "very anxious" to begin work on The North End's second phase.

"We hope to be in the ground either some time at the end of this year or early spring next year," Mandel said.

The second phase will have about 160 units in two buildings. Mandel hopes to obtain tax-exempt bonds to finance about 30 units that would be offered at below-market rents.

Those units would be available only for people earning no more than 60% of the Milwaukee area's median income. For a two-person household in Milwaukee, such as a single parent and child, that maximum income is $32,520, with the limits increasing as the household size increases.

"You need to be able to appeal to a very broad section of the market," Mandel said about plans to offer units at different rental rates.

The development of similar units in the Walker's Point neighborhood is drawing opposition.

^^^ Sweet! I can't wait! The first phase is awesome in real life and I can't wait to see the finishes on this next phase.

Also, that MSOE field is an interesting concept. If it weren't combined with a garage, I'd be vehemently against it, but taking two extremely low-density uses and stacking them might actually make a good use of space.
