Not at all a worthy contender, compared to Jax

Sorry, doesn't come close.. NYC + HK + Shanghai + Dubai can't even match up to the skyline glories of Jax.

I just Googled some skyline images of Florida cities , and TBH both Sarasota and Gainesville have a better skyline compared to Jacksonville's.

My preference..At least Gainesville gave the world Lynyrd Skynyrd, and for some odd reason I always knew that they were from Gainseville.Just a factoid I picked up along the way.

LOLZ about any mention of Jacksonville's skyline being better than Toronto's. To be a homer, Birmingham's skyline outperforms Jax's... Come on...

Source: Altoday.com

Jax downtown looks like a few tall buildings popping up randomly in a somewhat central location...

What's wrong with that shot? It looks good to me, you didn't even include most of the bridge.

Bigger isn't always better and no, don't put words in my mouth, Jacksonville is nowhere close to the best skyline in North America. But I do like it better than Toronto. It is what it is. I stand by it 100% and no amount of rdicule can change that.

Google harder. This thread comparing Jax's skyline to Toronto's is silly. With that said, Jax's actual skyline isn't being represented here with that Northbank shot and the early 2000s aerial still showing MODIS on the Independent Life Tower (A few towers have been built since then).

While it shouldn't be compared to Toronto's, it's significantly larger than Sarasota's and I'm not sure Gainesville even has a skyline. Look for shots from the Ortega River Bridge, Mathews Bridge or Beaver Street viaduct. You'll get the downtown Northbank and Southbank skylines in the same shot. Here's a river shot that gets them both:

Oh, and Lynyrd Skynyrd and half of those 60s/70s southern rock bands were from Jax.

Miami-Dade is the true urban core of Florida. Jacksonville just annexed a bunch of land for tax purposes.

No disrespect to Jacksonville, but its not really a thought when people think of Florida. Similar to the whole NYC vs NY State.

The state moves towards the direction of the principal city. In other words, caters towards it. When people think Florida, they think Miami or Orlando. When people think NY state, they think NYC. When people think NJ, they think Socialist Republic and high taxes.

No disrespect taken. South Florida has been Florida's largest urban center since the 1920s. Jax is basically a rust belt city with Sunbelt suburbs and a beach. However, Jax didn't annex land for tax purposes. Half the city and county officials were indicted in the 1960s, the school system was discredited, property taxes were skyrocketing and the city's population was falling. In reality, residents blew up both the city and county governments and replaced them with a single new governmental structure to rid itself of the outright corruption. If possible, more cities across the country should consider doing the same. It makes for a hell of a better political structure and efficient form of local government. With that said, I'm not sure what people think when they think Florida, outside of beaches, palm trees and Disney. The state doesn't really cater towards the direction of any principal city. On that end, it's different from New York.

theres certainly different "floridas." the florida that the northeast and canada thinks of is different than the florida that the south thinks of which is probably different again from the florida that the midwest thinks of (or any two people for that matter).

i grew up vacationing on the panhandle and have camped in every single state park on the gulf coast (plus everglades for that matter) before becoming more interested in south florida. it's practically a different state between the two regions, afterall, it's a 9.5 hour, 650 mile drive from pensacola to miami!

Note sure if it was mentioned above, but other "what-if" areas regarding Niagara Falls included:
- under original consideration for Disney World before Florida selected
- under original consideration for Mall of America but politics/taxes intervened
- under original consideration for location of United Nations on Navy Island (just above the Falls)
- nearby Grand Island was envisioned as the new Jewish homeland ("Ararat") in the early 1800s

Some people might find Rosie O'Donnell more attractive than than say, Margot Robbie, but you can expect to attract a little bit of ridicule if you keep exclaiming this preference.
