Bonn, former capital of West Germany

Bonn is a relatively small city (pop: 300,000) on the Rhine, just south of Cologne. Chosen as West Germany's capital in 1949 in no small part because it was close to the personal residence of the new nation's first chancellor (Konrad Adenauer), it has had to come to terms with a new status since the government (and embassies of course) began moving to Berlin in the late 1990s after reunification.

So here's a broad selection of pictures that I take every once in a while...

The city still has quite a bit of pre-WW2 architecture which is a rather uncommon feature for a city located in western Germany:

Charming, human-scale city of the type that is far too rare today.

Lovely.

Is there still much of the German civil service left working in Bonn, even though the legislative and executive arms of government have moved to Berlin?

At least a couple of years ago there were, if I remember correctly, actually more civil servants of the fed. government in Bonn than in Berlin. But bit by bit these posts have been moved to Berlin as well. Here's something of an overview of the agreement that was drawn up to compensate Bonn: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berlin-Bonn_Act

Nice pics of an underrated city.

I have family in Bonn. It's a much nicer-than-average medium sized city. Very livable. And close to very beautiful countryside.

Yes. German civil service has always been heavily decentralized, and Bonn retained a large number of federal jobs.

Germany is nothing like France, the UK or even the U.S. Federal jobs are not heavily concentrated in Berlin.
