Photo update | April 10th and 12th, 2008

Olympic Village, False Creek, and Downtown Vancouver panorama (my photos, composed in photoshop with the help of autostitch)

My photo, taken April 12th, 2008.

A panorama I made of the Olympic Village as seen from the north side of False Creek. (hand stitched in photoshop)

My photo, taken April 12th, 2008.

The City of Vancouver's Olympic Village Community Centre is coming along. This is the single level of underground parking for the centre.

My photo, taken April 12th, 2008.

One of two adjacent public piazzas awaits the attention of the stone masons.

My photo, taken April 12th, 2008.

Arthur Erickson's pair of torquing low-rise ultra-luxury condos.

My photo, taken April 12th, 2008.

The mini harbour (we seriously need to start naming these places) and the corner of the Olympic Village that is furthest along.

My photo, taken April 12th, 2008.

Frenzied construction.

My photo, taken April 12th, 2008.

More frenzied construction, this time looking between Arthur Erickson's two buildings towards the southwest corner of the Olympic Village and the mid-rise tower that is furthest along in its construction.

My photo, taken April 12th, 2008.

This is a corner of one of Arthur Erickson's twisting condos. It is a little hard to discern but the column is angled and each floor plate is slightly askew of the one below it. It will become a lot more clear in a couple months.

My photo, taken April 12th, 2008.

A couple from the Cambie Street Bridge taken a couple days earlier on the 10th of April.

Foundry, one block over from the Olympic Village and part of the larger Southeast False Creek precinct.

A light update on a dark spring day | April 17th, 2008

The mystery surrounding the purpose of the maroon coloured steel pillars has been solved and they are lights.

The new light standards uses into the same architectural vocabulary as the smaller lights.

^Thanks for keeping 'er so updated SFU.

Some pics of mine from yesterday:

These garbages have solar-powered trash compactors.

People seemed to love these new swiveling chairs. I thought they were pretty cool too. They swiveled really smoothly.

My personal favourites are these new lounge chairs... so comfortable.

Olympic Village menagarie | May 26th & June 12th

Here are a few shots of the City of Vancouver's official planning model of Southeast False Creek area and the Olympic Village precinct in its centre.
I took them on May 26th at a City of Vancouver urban planning public open house that was held at the central library downtown.

The open house was to share with the City's design for the new public plaza that will be at the heart of the Olympic Village and seek feedback from the public.
The Olympic Village site was once a shipyard and the steel pieces in the plaza are meant to evoke the ribs of a ships. The pavings will differ to show the outline of the hull of a ship.
I took some shots of the illustrations/renders.

Also, here are some new photos I took today, June 12th, of the Olympic Village.

A somewhat blurry shot of the Olympic Village as seen from a speeding SkyTrain. The blue and yellow tents on the near side of False Creek belong to Cirque du Soleil, who are in town for the summer.

The Olympic Village as seen from the north side of False Creek.

Taken by SFUVancouver, June 27th, 2008.

Arthur Erickson's 'twisty buildings' are turning out to be pretty neat in my opinion.

Taken by SFUVancouver, June 27th, 2008.

A couple of the western half of the Olympic Village, which is more advanced and, so far, quite photogenic.

Photo update June 29th

Last time I did the North side of the Olympic Village, so here is the South side.

Looking down First Avenue towards the Olympic Village. In the foreground on the right is The Exchange and behind it is Foundry.

Taken by SFUVancouver, June 29th, 2008.

Foundry's townhouses are beginning to shape up and windows are marching up the tower. So far it is very gray.

Taken by SFUVancouver, June 29th, 2008.

The Southwest corner of the Olympic Village. The 13-storey building on the left is market condominiums while the four-storey courtyard building on the right is non-market housing for families.
It will have an orchard on the roof and a pond in the courtyard. The pond will be supplied with water for most of the year by rainwater captured from the roof.

Taken by SFUVancouver, June 29th, 2008.

The mid-block pedestrian mews for residents has been nicely framed by the neighbouring 13-storey and 4-storey buildings mentioned with the previous photo.

Taken by SFUVancouver, June 29th, 2008.

Townhouses will line the base of the 13-storey building along the mid-block pedestrian mews.

Taken by SFUVancouver, June 29th, 2008.

Olympic Village Panorama (hand-stitched since Autostitch didn't like the set) Scroll --> --> -->

The haze in the air is apparently smoke from California wildfires that has drifted up the entire coast. We're having an thunder storm tonight because of it and we rarely get electrical storms in Vancouver.

Photo update | July 9th 2008

The Olympic Village, as seen from the Cambie Street Bridge looking down First Avenue. The first project on the right is called The Exchange and it is a heritage conversion of the old, old telephone exchange building into condos. The adjacent project is Foundry, a market condo building. Down the centre of First Ave in a grass median will run the City's new Downtown Streetcar, once its funding has been approved.

Aerial photo from July 28th

A sharp-eyed Delirium spotted an up-to-date shot of the Olympic Village on a local aerial photography company's website.
