That artist's rendition makes the building look better than it does in reality. The off center spire is horrible though the history behind it is pretty neat. It is a replica of the engagement ring given by the man who owns Metro National (land under everything that has the blue LED lighting to his wife.
What is that giant crown on the top for? Seems a bit extravagant for a hospital.

I'm guessing one of the prereq's for this thread that HIMS is referring to includes Guys Hospital in London.

This ugly mess will be getting an overhaul starting this summer. One of the large hotel chains bought it (Marriott or Hilton, I can't remember at this moment) and it will be getting a brand-new, banal, every-town-has-one facade.

It was just as ugly inside.....The photo isn't the best but you get the idea.

Holy crap! That's ugly.

I dunno... the Plaza Tower in New Orleans is starting to grow on me.

No discussion of ugly buildings is complete without a mention of the Cedar-Riverside complex east of downtown Minneapolis.

The Crack Stacks of Minneapolis.

When I was last in New Orleans (2003), the Plaza Tower was vacant.

Edit: Apparently it still is. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plaza_Tower

The Plaza Tower is ugly as sin, but I kind of like it.

It's the hospital's professional buildings; all doctors' offices and the crown is administrative offices and the owners' offices (i think). The hospital itself is behind the tower.

While I have tried to appreciate this building, I can't.

Yep this one and I see the crack buildings from Minneapolis have made an appearance. I do believe we can close this thread now.

I think we need a new thread for the ugliest building completed in the previous year.

And kudos to all the nominations for buildings that get fatter at the top. I stand to be corrected, but that is never a good look for a building.

The near-windowless box in Winston-Salem should be on the list. It was built as the Modernist-style headquarters for Security Life & Trust Company in 1951, with windows. In 1962, someone decided to reclad the building in the International-style and remove nearly all of the windows. Each floor only has one narrow window on the northwest corner. The ground floor has doors on the east and west ends, but no windows.

These are the only windows in the building! One window on each floor!

Enjoy this ugly building while you can. It's rumored Trammell Crow is in the process of buying it for a large mixed-use development and may demolish it or take it down to the frame and reclad? Demolition is most likely. No one wants a corner office or apartment with no windows.

I quite like the Plaza Tower. It has that very 60s feel to it, which in my opinion makes it historic. It'd be a shame to reclad it in flat blue glass or something. Just remove that antenna mess from the top and it'd be perfectly fine.

Now THIS crap I can't stand. All these cheapo kitsch hotels should be burned. They are ugly beyond salvation.

^ Agreed 100%, except kitsch implies something so bad it's good and there is nothing good about those buildings. They're Postmodern abortions, but they're so fucking ubiquitous that the average American has grown inured to their offensiveness.

^We build them in our downtown which makes the ugliness all the worse.

it's only going to get worse.

this is the new approved template for holiday inn express, many of which have already been proposed or begun construction around the country:

Almost any random change to that building would be an improvement. It's like a major depressive episode architecturally "expressed".

nice catch Leo, this is on top of that yearly list of the ugliest building in the world. There is movement afoot to demolish the whole plaza and city hall and redevelop it and move the city hall to another area. Its just too valuable a piece of property as well to have nothing generating any tax money OR economic activity. This is Boston however so it's gonna be a looooong time
