Fiscal questions are also a bit strange. It might be fiscally irresponsible to build this tower, it was fiscally irresponsible to build the Empire State (as we all know) and yet that doesn't stop it from being an important and interesting piece of skyscraper history.

If we're going to critique this tower why not criticize the design or safety or relative integration with present or future development...you know, things we discuss with most other highrise developments. This tower seems like it's one of many recent supertalls (or whatever it is we're calling towers greater than 400 or so meters) that are pyramidal (the London Shard, the Gazprom skyscraper in St. Petersburgh). I'm not crazy about this architectural trend in general but think that with the right materials this could be interesting.
I totally agree with you SD Phil, totally, you know if they also have the money to build this thing I say go for it, give it a shot, it will give our engineers Architects etc to further their and explore this type of technology a little bit more, so who knows, if this were able to pull through, mayby years down the road there will be more magnificant skyscrapers of this, and they will be tourist attractions, icons. This all relates to what you had said about the Empire State building, its an icon, its famous, and I'm pretty sure its occupied, also pretty sure when it was first built, it wasn't. I believe that this now proposed superstructure will allow us to look further in unimaginable engineering feats, that will become possible in the later decades. I don't neseccarily agree with having no density and just one tall building, but however I think these guys should push for it, let's see what they can come up with and let's see if they can do such a challenging task, probably the most challenging engineering feat in the world, let's see if they can put a superstucture of this size on the ground without sinking, resistant to high winds and hot summer days etc. So as in saying all this, I support this project if it ever is to go forward. If anyone can post pictures of updates, who live down there, that would be much appreciated, thanks guys for reading, enjoy your day.

as for the whole using the Empire State Building as an argument for these mile high towers, lest we forget that the Empire Stare Building wasn't 1000 M. high....if these towers were to pop up in ever ergonomically successful metropolis on Earth there would be a financial calamity due to the unimaginably impractical amount of space on the market.i love tall but theres a point when we have to put our foot down and say this is just silly. im all for healthy competition and a good pissing game once in a while but not for towers with sheerly undesirable heights. like some fourmers have pointed out...whose going to live or work at 3,280 feet in the air? i really cant see J.P Morgan Stanley or Bank of China saying "hey lets lease space on the 280th floor." short and sweet...towers of these heights are nowhere near being needed in this day and age and should not be built until there needed...

I gues we will have to wait and see what happens with this whole ordeal

The only reason it was worth comparing it to NY was because others seemed to be complaining about this building for some really strange reasons. I didn't compare this tower or makkah to New York by the way. I compared the complaints against this building to those complaints over the empire state building. It was a building to building (not city to city) comparison. The complaints seem to be similar (it's TOO tall, it's out of context, etc) and equally baseless. Believe it or not the comparison to the empire state was meant to convince people to stop using those arguments against the Jeddah tower.

A couple of things:

1. The diagram is useless without a legend to help me understand what it's about. I can tell it has something to do with the population of NY City over time but there are a lot of colored lines..

2. I'm not sure why New York's population in the 1920s is relevant to this discussion. The empire state was an economic gamble, a big one, and one that didn't pay off for quite some time. The Jeddah tower is also an economic gamble. It may or may not pay off. What's the difference? Both were/are grounding breaking for their height when proposed and both are being constructed in an area without any other structures of remotely similar heights.

You seem to misunderstand the point of the comparison and are making some really gross generalizations not only about where people are or are not willing to live and work but also about the mechanisms underlying global commerce and corporate decision making...why? Is it really such a threat that this tower gets built? If it succeeds then it sets an interesting precedent in terms of commercially viable skyscraper height. If it fails then it fails.

The point of the comparison (note above) isn't that the buildings are the same height (that is of course silly) but that there are similar complaints being leveled against the Jeddah tower as were leveled against the empire state building. Your new crop of complaints doesn't make that comparison any less apt. In fact it seems to reinforce my point. But maybe a comparison to the still very new Burj Dubai strike your fancy better?

The point is: this building is unprecedented in its height ONLY. Now...if that's enough to complain about then I think the tides are a changing on this forum for the worse. I sincerely hope this tower is a success.

Let's keep this on topic please. . . no need to rehash the obvious. . . those forumers who are still playing in the kiddie pool of skyscraper envy can take their comments elsewhere. . .

Wicked

it was bound to happen sooner or later.

but i am amazed that the building of the next worlds tallest building started only 10 months after
Burj Khalifah opened.

considering that the Burj Khalifah pushed it up 300 meters from Taipei 101 and many of the world economies aint exactly up and running like they should yet.

we do indeed live in crazy times

I'm really conflicted about this. On the one hand, it's a really f***ing huge tower, and I love that. On the other, it's just a damn spike, totally boring apart from its height. And then there's the fact of who's building it - plutocratic gangster/thugs who are only rich because we're addicted to their oil, and can only build things like this because they're not accountable to their people. But I suppose there is some intrinsic benefit in pushing the envelope, so it might as well be these guys who put in the initial risk.

I've hated this tower from the beginning .
I don't care whose tower it is , what country it's in , or how insanely silly it is in financial terms (it will almost certainly never be more than a disastrous drain of funds for as long as it stands) It's simply too big . It doesn't fit in any context .

About the only way you could get something like this to work aesthetically would be to put it somewhere where it is %100 isolated from other buildings . The contrast with the human landscape is what destroys this tower . Put it next to a mountain or even just simply in the middle of the desert and it could work . In any urban setting though ... it's just a disaster .

I agree with you to a point. The only thing is though is that just because it doesn't fit any context right now doesn't mean that it won't fit in context in 20 or 30 years.

The Burj Dubai wouldn't fit in most contexts and yet, I think, it's going to fit in really well in 5-6 years as the city grows around it. Plunk this down in the middle of Paris and of course it'll be out of context, any building greater than 30 floors will but it isn't being built in Paris.

There's something to be said for truly forward thinking construction though. The economic conditions of the future (as in...the next 20 years or so) may or may not sustain this building. They may or may not prove it a worthwhile gamble. I admire that especially if it pays off and it develops a brand new kind of hyper-tall highrise urban fabric in which it really does fit contextually.

wow, those were some of the most full-of-shit posts i've ever deleted.

if you wanna say something about the tower make sure you got something to back you up other than pure penis-envy and stereotypes... if it doesn't have to do with the tower, don't say it. if you want t talk about oil rich nations, start a thread in the discussions section.

next one to troll in this thread will get a week suspension.
