Forget the old B&O line. Think about the aging freight railroad infrastructure across Philly.

The high line is 100+ years old
The bridge connecting the high line and 25th viaduct is 100+ years old
The Delair bridge connecting Camden to the freight railroad networks is 100+ years old

As mentioned, this infrastructure will arrive at the end of it's useful life sooner rather than later.

The Delair Bridge is 123 years old; and the Schuylkill Arsenal Bridge is 133 years old; the later was built during the Chester Arthur administration for military purposes and both bridges are really old but in remarkably good condition.

yes, it would be a mistake to assume age is an indication of structural integrity. The Tappan Zee was built in the 50s and was falling apart. Many older structures were overbuilt and had higher factors of safety for various reasons- one being labor and materials were cheaper and there was less incentive to value engineer projects to the bare minimum. And even if the high line bridge needed work CSX would make the repairs- not suggest to build a subway tunnel costing over $500M dollars.

Non-sense, at this stage, I'm sure you could easily slip someone a couple bucks, bring a tent and stay there for at least a night or 2!

My sources tell me that, at this stage, demand is very low.

It looks like a great space/place to build something really special. A real once in a generation type location, right on the park, next to the river, less then a 10 minute walk to City Hall, across the bridge from 30th St. Station and all the promise that area has. It's almost like you couldn't ask for much more------

Oh well, maybe next time.

or we could look at a parking lot for 10 more years. 2 towers with 500 units is pretty significant- even if the tallest is only 32 floors.

There is plenty of opportunity nearby on Arch and Market. Lots of parking lots and low rise existing product waiting to be torn down.

It would be a very strange skyline if all the buildings were iconic. I wouldn't want to see the entire skyline designed by Robert Stern either. Yes, this site is on the river. It also has railroad tracks on 2 sides and on a flood plain. They're generally isolated. The design reflects this. There is little detail. It will all come down to the materials for me.

I’m not a big fan of pmc but they do seem to get things done.

I agree, they do seem to have a steady output. They don't bait and switch, they generally don't just warehouse sites, they build and that's good. I just wish they'd up their design game by 10% (easy for me to say!)

Love this project, but if it were a lot taller I'd feel the river tower vibe I get from RenCen in Detroit. Looking forward to 30th Street District. Also no I by no means am saying Philly has anything to learn from Detroit. I just like the vibe of the RenCen right along the river, we need that somewhere.

^^gjrip, is that a photo of Turtle from Entourage, or you? Either way it's kind of weird, but every time you post I'm swept away by Jane's Addiction and pining for Vince and E.
